Red Bull Confirms Sergio Perez to Stay, Aiming for Stability Amid Championship Pressure
Horner ultimately chose to retain Sergio Perez, considering it the most stable option
"Ultimately, it was Horner who made the call, and he concluded that maintaining Perez on the team was the most seamless course of action…"
Red Bull's choice to keep Sergio Perez on their team after the Formula 1 summer holiday has been characterized as "the most seamless option."
On Monday night, Red Bull affirmed to Crash.net that Perez is set to continue with the team past the shutdown, quashing rumors that had been circulating for several weeks.
Christian Horner, the head of Red Bull Racing, held a meeting with Helmut Marko to talk about the future of Perez due to his recent poor performances.
Over the past eight races, Perez has only amassed 28 points, jeopardizing Red Bull's leading status in the constructors' championship.
Nonetheless, Red Bull has shown renewed support for Perez as he aims to reverse the direction of his season.
Providing his insight on the matter, Sky Sports News journalist Craig Slater elucidated the reasoning behind retaining Perez.
"Slater mentioned that there's been considerable rumor about Red Bull potentially swapping out Sergio Perez for either the upcoming New Zealand racer Liam Lawson or maybe Daniel Ricciardo, who is presently racing for the RB team."
Today, a significant discussion took place at Red Bull's main office involving Christian Horner and Helmut Marko, the team's expert consultant, focusing on Sergio Perez's career prospects. Marko, known for his straightforward feedback, particularly criticized Perez's showing in Belgium, leading to speculation that he might advocate for a new driver to take Perez's place.
"However, this did not occur. Ultimately, Horner has made the choice for Perez to remain Max Verstappen's teammate after the summer break."
The choice was made considering that, despite Verstappen's secure spot in the driver rankings, McLaren is significantly narrowing the gap with Red Bull in the Constructors' Championship. Ultimately, this championship is crucial as it brings in the financial rewards and bonuses.
Perez's inconsistent scoring relative to Verstappen has diminished their standing. Ultimately, the choice was Horner's to make, and he chose to maintain Perez, anticipating better performance post-summer break.
McLaren holds a slim lead of 42 points over Red Bull in the Formula 1 team standings as the season is set to continue with the Dutch Grand Prix at the end of August.
