Porsche 911 Goes Hybrid: Iconic Sports Car’s Historic Leap Towards Electrification Revealed on May 28
Porsche is set to unveil a hybrid version of the iconic 911 sports car on May 28th. The semi-electric legend has already showcased its capabilities by completing a lap around the Nürburgring's Nordschleife track in just 7 minutes and 16.934 seconds. As the automotive industry shifts toward electric vehicles, even classic models like the Porsche 911 cannot escape the trend. However, while Porsche is introducing models like the new Macan as fully electric right off the bat and is preparing to release the 718 series without any internal combustion engines, the company is taking a more gradual approach with its cherished flagship model. Initially, the 911 will embrace electrification in the form of a hybrid.

The inaugural hybrid version of the Porsche 911 is gearing up for its debut. Following a detailed development and testing phase, the new sports car featuring a performance-focused, partially electrified powertrain is set for mass production. The global unveiling is scheduled for May 28, 2024.
For the first time in the 61-year legacy of our iconic model, we are incorporating a hybrid engine into a 911 street car. This innovative performance hybrid enhances the dynamism of the 911. Throughout its development, we left nothing to chance, rigorously testing the new 911 in a myriad of conditions across the globe. Whether it was in biting cold or extreme heat, as experienced during our final assessments in Dubai, our engineers and test drivers have collectively clocked in over five million kilometers in testing." Testing and fine-tuning on the Nürburgring's Nordschleife circuit has always been a critical element in the evolution of the 911, including the hybrid model. During performance evaluations, Porsche ambassador Jörg Bergmeister completed a lap of the track in the Eifel mountains on September 15, 2023, clocking a time of 7:16.934 minutes. This marks a 8.7-second improvement over the hybrid's predecessor. The test vehicle used standard tires and was equipped with an aerodynamics package featuring a fixed rear wing, an option that has been available across several model generations.
The latest 911 model has seen significant speed improvements on the track. There's increased traction, a considerable boost in power, and the immediate response of the performance hybrid offers a substantial edge," says Jörg Bergmeister, a brand ambassador for Porsche.

Porsche has not yet provided precise information about the upcoming part-time electric powertrain. However, it is expected to continue to be based on a boxer engine. Whether it will have four or six cylinders is still undisclosed. It's also unclear if it will be a full hybrid or a plug-in hybrid, meaning it's uncertain if this new 911 model will have a significant electric range or not.
