Pierre Gasly Advocates for Reversal of “Unfair” Ban on Kevin Magnussen Following Italian GP Incident
Pierre Gasly calls for the reversal of Kevin Magnussen's "unjust" F1 suspension.
Pierre Gasly believes that Kevin Magnussen's F1 suspension should be lifted.
Pierre Gasly has urged Formula 1's officials to overturn the penalty given to Kevin Magnussen after their minor crash at the Italian Grand Prix.
Haas team member Magnussen will be absent from the upcoming race in Baku due to becoming the initial F1 racer to accumulate 12 penalty points on his licence within a year. The Danish driver received a 10-second time penalty along with two penalty points for an incident involving Gasly during Sunday's Monza race.
However, the driver from Alpine disagrees that Magnussen deserved a penalty and has expressed readiness to discuss the matter with the stewards in an effort to have the suspension revoked.
"Truly, it was insignificant," Gasly remarked. "Throughout the afternoon, our pace was incredibly sluggish. It's crucial we address this issue since I had strong faith in our race potential, which turned out to be much more challenging than anticipated.
I heard he received a penalty of ten seconds. It's somewhat unexpected to me, given his effort, even though there was some wheel-to-wheel action, ultimately, it didn't cost me any time. So, it's a bit surprising indeed.
"I'm hoping they might reconsider because it would certainly be unjust. I'm willing to discuss it with the stewards – I'll try my best. It would seem incredibly unfair given the nature of the incident."
Magnussen, after securing a point in Monza with a 10th place finish, expressed his total bafflement regarding the penalty.
"Magnussen expressed his dismay, stating, 'I'm totally baffled by the penalty. Honestly, it makes no sense to me whatsoever.'"
Gasly and I engaged in intense racing as we approached Turn 4, where we experienced a minor collision. Both of us failed to make the corner, re-entered the track without any damage to our cars, and the incident had no impact on our race outcomes. Despite this, I was issued a 10-second penalty.
"In the initial lap, Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg were involved in an incident where Ricciardo forced Hulkenberg off the track and onto the grass at a speed of 300km/h. This action significantly ruined Hulkenberg's race, causing extensive damage to his vehicle. As a result, Ricciardo was penalized with a five-second penalty.
What's the reasoning behind this? It simply makes no sense to me.
Haas has not officially announced Magnussen's successor for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but Oliver Bearman is highly expected to step in, marking his first complete F1 season with the American team in 2025.
