Perez Penalized with Grid Drop for Spanish GP Following Unsafe Driving to Evade Safety Car in Canada
Sergio Perez faces a grid penalty at the Spanish Grand Prix for attempting to dodge the Safety Car
Perez penalized with a three-spot grid reduction for operating his vehicle in a 'hazardous state' during the Canadian race.
Sergio Perez is set to receive a three-position penalty on the starting grid for the upcoming Formula 1 race due to operating his Red Bull car in a hazardous manner to dodge a Safety Car incident at the Canadian Grand Prix.
During the chaotic and rainy race in Montreal on Sunday, the driver from Mexico faced a crash on the 51st lap. He managed to make his way back to the pit lane to withdraw from the race, his car's rear wing visibly damaged
Perez underwent scrutiny for the event, and it was determined that he did not exit the track despite having severe mechanical issues following substantial damage to the rear wing. This was found to violate Article 26.10 of the FIA's F1 Sporting Regulations.
Consequently, Perez has received a three-place grid penalty for the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.
Red Bull conceded to the officials that their strategy was aimed at preventing the deployment of a Safety Car, especially since Perez's colleague, Max Verstappen, was at the forefront of the race. Consequently, the team has incurred a penalty of €25,000.
The officials consulted with the driver of Car 11 (Sergio Perez), a representative from his team, and examined footage, communications from the team radio, and in-car video recordings, the officials detailed.
Following a collision with the barriers at Turn 6, the driver pressed on around the track until completing the lap, despite the vehicle sustaining considerable damage, resulting in the loss of numerous carbon fibre components en route to the pit lane. During the hearing, the team stated that the driver was instructed to return to the pits in an attempt to prevent the deployment of the Safety Car.
"The Stewards have concluded that, in addition to a monetary fine for the team, a disciplinary measure related to the sport is required because of the safety risks associated with the incident. This punishment is applied following established precedents."
