Perez Admits Over-Exploration of Red Bull F1 Car Amid Qualifying Struggles at Spanish GP
Sergio Perez "pushed the limits" of the Red Bull F1 car "a bit excessively" as his difficulties persist
Sergio Perez was taken aback by his qualifying issues at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Sergio Perez confessed that he pushed the limits of his Red Bull Formula 1 car "a bit too far," resulting in a lackluster performance during the Spanish Grand Prix qualifying session.
Red Bull faced challenges as the Barcelona weekend began, yet Max Verstappen was just barely edged out of the top spot by McLaren’s Lando Norris. Meanwhile, Perez managed to secure only the eighth position in his Red Bull, trailing his teammate by approximately six-tenths of a second.
Starting from P8, the driver will move to 11th place for Sunday's grand prix after Perez receives a three-place grid penalty. This penalty was given because he drove his car in an unsafe condition following a crash in Canada during the previous race.
"Regrettably, my performance in the last segment of Q3 was lacking," Perez stated. "I fell short of my own standards and believe we could have been much more competitive."
"We encountered some challenges because we had just one set available. The wind shifted slightly. However, on the whole, I believe we were somewhat off the mark this weekend."
"We've been trying to find the right balance from time to time. However, I think we've made some solid progress, making me feel slightly more at ease. The differences are minimal. To truly pinpoint those details, I needed to make consistent progress, which I lacked over the weekend."
"We'll focus on improving it, aiming for a strong performance in tomorrow's race. There's a lot of work ahead. We've made some trade-offs in qualifying, hoping for better tire wear."
Perez, who managed to make it to Q3 for the first time in four races following back-to-back Q1 exits in Monaco and Canada, stated: "I believe we tested the car extensively. I feel we faced more difficulties than expected in Barcelona."
"The correlation can be hit or miss at times. I believe tyre problems have also played a role. Therefore, it has been challenging to find a clear path throughout the weekend, but I think we're finally making progress."
“We aim to demonstrate strong race speed tomorrow and move forward swiftly.”
When questioned about whether he adjusted his car significantly following Friday's practice, Perez responded, "Yes, we've been experimenting with the car extensively. Perhaps a bit excessively."
Perez conceded that he needs to put in more effort to bridge the considerable distance between himself and his teammate Verstappen.
"It's been a tougher challenge here compared to last year," he mentioned. "Last year, the weather conditions played a significant role. It was wet, and I was eliminated in Q2."
"I believe my main challenge here was maintaining balance. The distance to Max has been quite significant this weekend. We definitely have some improvements to make in that area."
