Number Drama: Antonelli Claims #12 for 2025 Rookie Season, Leaving Doohan to Recalculate
Two Formula 1 drivers both desired the same number for the 2025 season – here's the outcome
Formula 1 drivers are required to choose a number that they will keep for their entire career
Kimi Antonelli and Jack Doohan both aimed to use the identical race number for their debut Formula 1 season in 2025.
Antonelli has emerged victorious in the struggle to secure the highly sought-after #12.
According to F1 rules, drivers are required to choose a number that they will keep for the entirety of their career.
A number is considered available only if the previous user has been out of Formula 1 for two years.
The number 12 hasn't been utilized by any driver since 201
However, both Antonelli from Mercedes and Doohan from Alpine had their eyes on it.
Antonelli mentioned that he has a fondness for many numbers, but 12 holds a special place for him. He explained that he has been using the number 12 since his time in F4, and since it has always brought him good results, he sees no reason to switch it up for the next year.
Antonelli wore the number 12 while driving for Mercedes during the first practice session at the Italian Grand Prix in Formula 1.
It is significant to note that Ayrton Senna used the number 12 for multiple years during the 1980s.
Antonelli likely submitted his application for the #12 before Doohan, which is why the FIA approved his request.
“I had planned to go with number 12," Doohan mentioned, but Antonelli selected it first.
"I spent the summer break contemplating, and we ultimately decided on it, so I'll begin my Formula 1 season with the number 12."
Doohan needs to select a new number to begin his Formula 1 career, fully aware that this number will stay with him throughout his time in the series.
