Mercedes’ Strategic Setup Breakthrough: The Key to Lewis Hamilton’s F1 2024 Resurgence
Mercedes identifies critical factor behind Lewis Hamilton's comeback in F1 2024
"This definitely played a role and it's likely accurate to mention that in the initial races, setting up was more challenging for Lewis compared to George."
Andrew Shovlin, the trackside engineering director for Mercedes, has identified the team's skill in getting the setup right from the first practice session (FP1) as a major factor behind Lewis Hamilton's enhanced performance in the 2024 F1 season.
Despite Mercedes ranking as the fourth strongest team in the early part of the season, Lewis Hamilton consistently lagged behind his Mercedes colleague, George Russell, in performance.
Over the previous eight races, Hamilton has amassed 123 points, with only Max Verstappen (141) and Oscar Piastri (126) outscoring him.
In this period, Hamilton has secured two additional victories, effectively breaking his winless streak that had extended since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
Shovlin is convinced that the advancements in the car's configuration have played a key role in Hamilton's resurgence.
"Shovlin mentioned at the Belgian Grand Prix, an event covered by Crash.net, that initially, Lewis might have had a tougher time getting accustomed to the car. He pointed out that one significant improvement made to the vehicle was achieving a successful setup from the very first practice session, FP1."
"Establishing a solid base is crucial for enhancing performance and making precise adjustments, which significantly benefits your weekend. At the beginning of the season, we implemented minor modifications, but then abruptly, the entire balance of the car shifted, leaving us facing considerable difficulties."
“Thus, that assistance was significant, and it’s likely accurate to state that in the initial races, setting up proved more challenging for Lewis than for George.”
Pirelli's tires play a central role in Formula 1 performance, and optimizing their condition is key to improving lap speeds.
He further mentioned, "It appears there's a specific way of driving that complements these tyres well. Nowadays, it's common to see both drivers not differing much in their car setups. So, once the vehicle is performing optimally, the same approach tends to benefit both drivers equally."
"In the intervals, they analyze each other's actions to identify areas of improvement."
"Throughout the year, they've collaborated closely from the start. Unwilling to settle for their current standings, they've supported one another by exploring various setup adjustments and driving techniques."
"Collectively, you advance as a unit, which is the essence of how a team with a pair of drivers operates."
