Mercedes’ Relentless Upgrade Drive: Inside Their Race-by-Race Development Push for 2024 F1 Dominance
Mercedes' bold strategy for development unveiled with 'upgrades at every race'
Mercedes intends to introduce enhancements "nearly at every race" as they aim to capitalize on their recent advancements.
According to Toto Wolff, the speed at which the Mercedes team is working to improve their 2024 Formula 1 car is unprecedented.
Mercedes has introduced numerous updates to enhance their struggling W15 car during recent races, as part of an assertive development effort. This has led to a significant improvement in their performance following a challenging beginning to the season.
George Russell took advantage of an incident involving Max Verstappen and Lando Norris to secure an unexpected victory in Austria. This win came after the team had achieved consecutive podium finishes in both Canada and Spain.
Wolff mentioned that Mercedes intends to introduce improvements "nearly at every race."
"We're introducing improvements at nearly every race now. The factory is operating at maximum capacity," Wolff mentioned to the media, including Crash.net, in Austria.
"In the past 12 years, we've never experienced the ability to develop, design, manufacture, and bring a product to the track with such high-quality components. I've truly never witnessed such speed."
"We have introduced enhancements at every race so far. We plan to continue this trend by implementing improvements at each upcoming race, with the aim of making significant progress by the summer break. Although other teams are also putting in a lot of effort, we hope to gradually close the performance gap."
"The gap was about 15 seconds over 70 laps, which translates to roughly two-tenths of a second per lap at the Austrian Grand Prix. That's not bad, placing us in third. If we can cut that gap in half, we should be able to compete for the lead."
Mercedes continues to hold a solid fourth place in the constructors’ championship, yet their spirits have been lifted by notable progress made in recent weeks.
According to Wolff, Mercedes is now on a path to compete for race victories based on their performance before the season concludes.
"We were the third fastest car in terms of pace," Wolff noted. "This has been the case for the past three weekends, and it's very encouraging to observe this upward trend and its consistency."
"Racing takes place on Sunday. Occasionally, we experience the downside, but today we gained from the mishap at the front. It's satisfying to secure a victory this year. This means that four different teams have won races in 2023, and it's noteworthy because we hadn't clinched a win since 2011."
"It's encouraging to hear that, and there's definitely strong momentum within the team now to reach a level where we can genuinely compete for victory. I believe we will achieve that."
