Mercedes Open to Adrian Newey Signing but Not Relying on a ‘Messiah,’ Says Toto Wolff
Mercedes is not ruling out the possibility of bringing Adrian Newey on board, but they are not depending on him as a savior. Toto Wolff has indicated that Mercedes would consider adding the renowned F1 designer to their team.
Toto Wolff has acknowledged that any team would consider hiring the renowned F1 designer Adrian Newey, but he emphasizes that Mercedes is not "waiting for a savior."
Newey, who is 65 years old, will be available to join a different team at the beginning of 2025. This follows his choice to depart from Red Bull after nearly 20 years with the organization, during which he contributed to their 13 world championship victories.
Adrian Newey, widely regarded as the best Formula 1 car designer ever, has been frequently associated with Ferrari, Mercedes, Aston Martin, and Williams in the months after the news of his upcoming exit was made public.
When questioned about whether Mercedes might be keen on hiring Newey, Wolff responded to Sky Sports F1, saying, "No team can overlook Adrian."
"He must integrate into the organization and have a genuine desire for it. Therefore, it’s essential to continuously seek out opportunities."
"We're not currently expecting a savior to come."
Wolff acknowledged that Mercedes made some "incorrect" choices before the 2022 regulation changes, but he is optimistic that the team is currently heading in the right direction following promising advancements recently.
"Formula 1 revolves around physics," he stated. "An engineer might argue that it's straightforward to alter the car's physics. However, in reality, it is people who make the decisions."
"I think some of the choices we made in 2021 were somewhat incorrect. We've fixed those issues. We've altered the structure – some people have exited, and new people have come on board."
"We are meticulous in organizing our meetings, which is the primary reason for our progress."
Wolff mentioned that the times when you face defeat are the moments your rivals wish they had, as those are the instances where you gain the most knowledge.
"There were challenging moments, but it was crucial for advancing the team's development to the next level."
George Russell took advantage of a crash involving Max Verstappen and Lando Norris during the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday to secure Mercedes' first victory since 2022.
