Mercedes Open to Adrian Newey Acquisition but Not Desperate for a ‘Messiah’, Says Toto Wolff
Toto Wolff has not ruled out the possibility of Mercedes bringing on board renowned Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey, though he emphasizes they are not seeking a savior.
Toto Wolff has acknowledged that no Formula 1 team would overlook the opportunity to bring on board renowned F1 engineer Adrian Newey, yet he emphasizes that Mercedes is not in anticipation of a savior.
At the age of 65, Newey will have the opportunity to align with a new squad in the beginning of 2025 after opting to exit Red Bull. His tenure at the team spanned nearly 20 years during which he played a pivotal role in securing all 13 world championships for them.
Newey, often hailed as the most accomplished Formula 1 vehicle designer in history, has been strongly associated with moves to Ferrari, Mercedes, Aston Martin, and Williams following the news of his upcoming exit.
In response to inquiries about Mercedes potentially acquiring Newey, Wolff conveyed to Sky Sports F1 that no team could overlook Adrian.
"However, it's essential for him to integrate well into the organization and to have the desire for it. Thus, I believe, one must consistently explore possibilities."
"Today, we're not sitting around expecting a savior to appear."
Wolff acknowledged that Mercedes made several incorrect choices in preparation for the 2022 regulatory changes but remains optimistic about the team's direction following recent positive developments.
"He clarified that Formula 1 revolves around physics. An engineer might argue, 'All you need to do is alter the car's physics.' However, the reality is that it all comes down to the choices made by people.
"In my opinion, some of the choices we made in 2021 were incorrect. We've addressed these issues by altering our organizational setup, resulting in some members departing and new ones coming aboard."
"Our meticulous approach to meeting preparation is key to our progress."
Wolff noted, "The instances in which you face defeat are the very moments your rivals wish to avoid, for it is then that you gain the greatest insights.
"There were challenging moments, yet they were crucial for advancing the team to the subsequent stage."
George Russell seized the opportunity presented by a crash involving Max Verstappen and Lando Norris during Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix, securing Mercedes' inaugural victory since 2022.
