McLaren’s Calculated Caution: Inside Their Strategic Approach to F1 2024 Upgrades
McLaren discloses careful strategy for new F1 floor enhancement: ‘We could have reservations’
McLaren clarifies the reasons behind their careful approach to upgrades for the 2024 F1 season.
Andrea Stella, the head of McLaren's Formula 1 team, has disclosed that they have intentionally taken a careful approach regarding the timing and selection of upgrades for their car in 2024.
Since the middle of last year, McLaren has made impressive strides in development, moving from the rear of the grid to become a title contender.
Overall, they have consistently been the quickest team in 2024 and are on track to secure their first F1 constructors' championship since 1998.
McLaren has been careful with their improvements, unveiling a major set of updates in Miami.
Since that time, McLaren has been careful about the new components they introduce to the car, adding another enhancement at Zandvoort.
After the race at Monza, where Crash.net was on the scene in the paddock, Stella shared the reasons behind McLaren's hesitance to implement their new floor design on the car.
“We haven't introduced a major upgrade since Miami,” Stella explained. “The subsequent notable upgrade, although smaller than Miami’s, was at Zandvoort, and it didn’t concern the floor – it was merely a minor adjustment. It pertained to different parts of the car.”
“There’s a rationale behind why we haven't introduced certain upgrades yet – we believe that if we had proceeded, we might have encountered uncertainties when these components were tested on the actual vehicle.
“We are carefully evaluating to ensure that the development is fully ready before taking it to the track.”
McLaren showcased their speed at Monza yet again, but Ferrari's strategic maneuvers prevented them from securing victory.
Stella believes that the hierarchy among drivers is determined by who can best handle the available grip, rather than any one team having a superior setup.
He mentioned that the grid positions are more about the drivers maximizing the available grip than about having a superior car.
Analyzing the actual lap times instead of merely focusing on the P1/P2 positions reveals that every driver from the top four teams had the potential to secure the pole position on the grid.
