Max Verstappen Shuts Down Toto Wolff’s Interest in Mercedes Switch for 2025, Reaffirms Commitment to Red Bull
Max Verstappen has dismissed Toto Wolff's recent attempts to recruit him to the Mercedes F1 team for the 2025 season.
Max Verstappen has expressed that he is committed to staying with Red Bull for the 2025 F1 season, even though Mercedes team leader Toto Wolff continues to show interest in him.
Following the Spanish Grand Prix, Wolff was questioned about the potential of bringing Verstappen on board to take over from Lewis Hamilton in 2025.
Indications strongly suggest that Mercedes is leaning towards selecting Andrea Kimi Antonelli, though Wolff is not hurrying to reach a conclusion.
While in Barcelona, he mentioned, "No, a decision regarding the driver has not been made."
"We want to delay making this decision for as long as we can, since the future is uncertain."
Horner replied to Wolff, emphasizing that Verstappen will definitely remain with the team: "I am absolutely certain about Max's plans for next year. He will be with us. But is Toto still discussing him?"
In a press briefing before the Austrian Grand Prix this weekend, Verstappen was queried about remarks made by Horner and Wolff, and if he would definitively reject the idea of joining Mercedes.
He mentioned, “I believe I’ve stated this previously. Obviously, there’s a lot of discussion happening. Our top priority is to ensure we have a highly competitive car moving forward. Right now, the competition is fierce, but our team is collaborating effectively to make further advancements.”
"I've mentioned this to the team before; we are dedicating our efforts and attention to next year with the aim of becoming competitive once more."
Red Bull's dominance from last year seems to have waned, with McLaren potentially having the fastest car in the most recent races.
Nevertheless, even though Red Bull's lead is diminishing, Verstappen dismissed the idea of an abrupt change solely for that reason.
"I don't believe that's how Formula 1 operates, where you can just suddenly decide to leave and say 'goodbye everyone.' That's not the way it functions," he remarked. "I have an extended contract with the team, and I am very content with my current situation."
“As I mentioned previously, our attention is already on the upcoming year, particularly on the new features we can integrate into the car. I believe that clearly indicates where I’ll be driving next year.”
