Max Verstappen Blasts Red Bull Strategy After Austrian GP Chaos: ‘We Did Everything Wrong’
Max Verstappen’s exasperation with Red Bull unveiled: 'We made all the wrong moves'
Max Verstappen expressed his irritation over how Red Bull managed the Austrian Grand Prix.
SPIELBERG, AUSTRIA – Max Verstappen openly expressed his disappointment with Red Bull's approach and handling of the F1 Austrian Grand Prix, lamenting that "nothing went right."
The triple world champion seemed set for an easy win at the Red Bull Ring, but a delayed second pit stop put him at risk from McLaren's Lando Norris.
Verstappen managed to fend off multiple attempts by Norris to overtake, but their battle reached a critical point at Turn 3 on Lap 64, resulting in both drivers suffering punctures and requiring pit stops for repairs.
Norris had to retire from the race, whereas Verstappen managed to keep going and secured a fifth-place finish. Meanwhile, George Russell from Mercedes took advantage of the situation to clinch an unexpected victory.
In a post-race interview, the Dutch driver acknowledged that he thought Red Bull had committed several errors during pivotal moments of the 71-lap race on Sunday.
"The initial phase went very well, but towards the end, I encountered a lot of traffic. We should have pitted to avoid it, as it caused me to lose valuable lap time," Verstappen remarked.
"We made numerous mistakes today. To begin with, our strategy was flawed, and the pitstops were a complete mess."
"The first pit stop was poor, but the second one was an even bigger catastrophe. As a result, you end up losing time. In total, those two pit stops cost you around six seconds."
“Then, naturally, it turns into a competition once more. This is why we find ourselves in situations where, regrettably, accidents can occur, even though we always strive to avoid them.
"We made every possible mistake."
When questioned whether he was more frustrated with Red Bull’s race strategy and execution compared to the incident with Norris, Verstappen responded: “Yes, because today has been terrible. Everything has gone wrong.”
"I’m voicing my frustration about the tires; we didn’t make a pit stop. I got caught in traffic, and the pit stop strategy was poorly executed. Everything just fell apart."
Verstappen commented, "It was an extremely poor day. I genuinely can't explain the reason."
"All of a sudden, the car went from having a decent balance in the first part to being completely unmanageable later on, which usually suggests that something had gone wrong."
"However, despite that, we could have secured a victory today if we hadn't made so many mistakes during the pit stops."
