Mattia Binotto Makes Formula 1 Return with Audi as Andreas Seidl Exits in Major Management Shake-Up
Mattia Binotto makes a comeback to Formula 1, joining Audi following Andreas Seidl's exit.
Ex-Ferrari chief Mattia Binotto is set to make a comeback to Formula 1, taking the reins of Audi's team.
On Tuesday, Audi announced that Binotto has officially joined the team, marking a significant change in their management structure. This overhaul includes the departure of Sauber CEO Andreas Seidl and Oliver Hoffmann, who previously served as the chairman of the board of directors, from the company.
Binotto, aged 54 and having stepped away from Formula 1 following his exit from Ferrari in late 2022, is set to take up the dual positions of Chief Operating and Chief Technical Officer at Audi starting August 1. His primary duty will be to oversee the preparations for the German manufacturer's anticipated entry into Formula 1 in 2026.
Audi's Chief Executive Officer, Gernot Doellner, expressed his pleasure in having Mattia Binotto join their determined Formula 1 initiative.
Leveraging over a quarter-century of expertise in Formula 1, he is poised to play a pivotal role in Audi's advancement.
"Our goal is to elevate the entire Formula 1 initiative to peak performance through the establishment of transparent management frameworks, specific roles, minimized points of interaction, and streamlined processes for making decisions.
"To achieve this goal, it is essential for the group to operate autonomously and swiftly."
As reported by the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, Mike Krack, the present head of Aston Martin, may also become involved in the Audi initiative.
Audi is set to assume control of the Sauber-operated team in 2026. The team, based in Switzerland, is facing a challenging 2024 season and remains the only team without any points thus far.
