Marc Marquez’s Ducati Learning Curve: Insights from Andrea Dovizioso on a Former Rival’s Strategy
Marc Marquez focused on gaining "as much experience as possible" with Ducati ahead of 2025
Andrea Dovizioso shares his thoughts on his former competitor
According to Andrea Dovizioso, Marc Marquez has focused primarily on getting used to the Ducati this year.
Marquez had to wait until the 12th round of the MotoGP season to secure his first victory since joining Gresini, but he finally achieved it with a weekend of dominance at Aragon.
After his victory at Misano, he has now secured wins in consecutive grand prix races. He is currently trailing the championship leader, Jorge Martin, by 53 points.
Speaking to Sky, Dovizioso, who once competed against him, expressed uncertainty about whether Marquez has returned to his previous form, saying, "I don't know."
Dovizioso remarked, "Witnessing such dominant strength at Aragon was impactful."
He seems to have realized that competing for the championship this year isn’t feasible, so he’s treating this season as a way to get ready for the next one. He’s using it as a learning experience, starting with the initial sessions, through to qualifying, and into the races.
I believe Marquez is still not performing at his full potential.
"He will switch to another bike, allowing him to gain as much experience as possible with a new team that is entirely different from the one he's familiar with. Achieving this level of comfort takes considerable time."
In 2025, Marquez is set to join the factory Ducati team, where he will team up with Pecco Bagnaia, both riding identical bikes.
Currently, he is competing with the GP23 against the more powerful GP24s.
MotoGP is scheduled to return to Misano next week, a track where Marquez has previously secured a victory, and will then move on to its eastern tracks, which may present conditions similar to those in Aragon.
This development has sparked optimism that he might be able to compete for the championship title again.
"Although anything is possible, Martin and Bagnaia are exceptionally skilled at utilizing the bike, making it challenging to join in," Dovizioso remarked.
"Besides their speed and the quality of their bike, they have a better handle on the situation compared to Marquez."
"I believe he is aware of it and seems to be handling it more calmly than he has throughout his career."
