Marc Marquez Ends Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted to feeling self-imposed pressure to achieve an impeccable performance at the Aragon MotoGP event.
"I couldn't enjoy the Sprint because I was aware of the significance of today's race," he said.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win at last weekend's Aragon MotoGP, describing the event as "perfect."
Marquez led all the practice sessions, secured pole position with an 0.8-second advantage, clinched the Sprint with a commanding performance, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session Marquez didn't lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain that fell overnight and continued into Sunday morning, as he didn't record a lap time.
In the post-race press conference, Marquez described the weekend as ideal. He mentioned that they led all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and the team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the top racing class.
"In the race, we had an incredible feeling right from the start," he expressed. "The race was extremely long, and managing emotions in the final laps was tough, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4kg."
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, winning this victory felt unbelievable. Instantly, my thoughts turned to the entire journey we undertook, the people surrounding me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. I entered as a novice rider, aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set a new objective and will continue striving forward."
Marquez established a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various matters in the final laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "But beyond just the podium, the Gresini garage is always a lively and joyous place, constantly filled with a party atmosphere."
"Besides that, the most important factor was the support from those around me. In extremely challenging and tough times, having a compassionate and empathetic team, who felt my struggles even more intensely than I did, was what truly made a difference."
“The celebration felt unusual because, in other races, the adrenaline was much higher when we celebrated second or third places. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline.”
After leading every session except for the rain-affected Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez acknowledged experiencing some pressure to finish his weekend with a Grand Prix win.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he mentioned. "You could tell from yesterday's Sprint that I wasn't having fun because I was aware of the significance of today and recognized the major opportunity it presented."
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay focused. When you have the necessary speed, it appears that you can handle the situation well; you seem consistent and intelligent. However, without that speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the top contenders."
After securing the win, Marquez views it as significant as his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his return to success following an arm injury he sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany."
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and facing a tough period, the significance of your wins changes."
"Although I have secured 60 victories, those two wins, along with my initial triumph in MotoGP, hold the greatest significance as they boost your confidence in a unique manner and provide an extra sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was just riding effortlessly, going with the flow, but I made sure to stay very focused to avoid any errors."
Despite this being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had realized a win was achievable since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the testing in Valencia, Marquez understood that a race victory was forthcoming. "At that moment, I recognized that we would have our chances," he explained. "However, competing for the championship is another matter, and for that, we must continue to put in the effort."
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
