Marc Marquez Breaks Nearly Three-Year Win Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Triumph
Marc Marquez admitted he "put pressure on myself" to ensure a flawless performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I wasn’t having fun during the Sprint because I was aware of the significance of today," he said.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a triumph he called "perfect" after an exceptional weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second lead, claimed a commanding victory in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain that fell overnight from Saturday into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
During the post-race press conference, Marquez described the weekend as ideal. He mentioned that they led in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and the team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey of nearly three years without a win and the immense relief he experienced when he finally crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-tier victory.
"In the race, we experienced an incredible feeling right from the start," he remarked. "The race was extremely lengthy, making it challenging to keep our emotions in check during the final laps, but when I crossed the finish line, it felt as though I had shed 3-4kg."
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, achieving this victory felt unbelievable. I immediately began reflecting on the entire journey, the support from everyone around me, including my family, my girlfriend, and my brother Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team offering me a crucial opportunity. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my utmost effort, and we succeeded. We have set a new goal and continue to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, my thoughts were already on reaching the podium," he remarked. "Beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful, it's always like a celebration there."
"Besides that, the most important factor was the support from those around me. In extremely challenging times, being surrounded by a compassionate and caring team, who were feeling the strain even more than I was, truly made all the difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual; in some other races, the adrenaline was much higher when celebrating second or third places. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
Marc Marquez acknowledged that he experienced some pressure to secure a Grand Prix victory after leading every session except for the wet Sunday morning Warm Up.
"Today, I felt the weight of expectations," he remarked. "During yesterday's Sprint, I couldn't really enjoy myself because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you have the necessary speed, it appears that you can handle the situation well, maintain consistency, and make intelligent decisions. However, without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to achieve higher speeds in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leading contenders."
Marc Marquez regards this victory as being on par with his 2021 German Grand Prix win, which marked his first triumph following the arm injury he sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as my performance in Germany in 2021."
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of the wins changes."
"Although I've had 60 wins, those two triumphs, along with my initial MotoGP victory, stand out as the most significant. They provide a unique boost in confidence and an added sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding with ease and in a smooth rhythm, but I was especially focused on avoiding any errors."
Even though Marquez was in his 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he admitted that he had believed winning was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory is within reach. He noted that the test showed they would have their chances. However, he emphasized that contending for the championship requires continued effort.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
