Liam Lawson’s High-Stakes Red Bull F1 Test at Silverstone: A Glimpse into the Future?
Insights into Liam Lawson's Trial with Red Bull's Latest F1 Vehicle at Silverstone
Details on Liam Lawson's trial run in Red Bull's newest Formula 1 machine at Silverstone.
Today, Liam Lawson, the reserve driver for Red Bull, will be taking the current F1 car for a spin at Silverstone. Here are the details of the event.
Lawson, who caught the eye during a five-race stint with AlphaTauri (currently known as Red Bull) last season filling in for an injured Daniel Ricciardo, is set to test drive Red Bull's 2024 race car at Silverstone during today's promotional filming event.
This event represents one of the two promotional days allowed for Red Bull annually. Lawson will have a limit of 200 kilometers, roughly equal to 33 laps around the international circuit of the British Grand Prix, to drive on specially created Pirelli tires. These tires are distinct from the ones typically used during a regular Grand Prix weekend.
There's been a lot of buzz around Lawson's trial, fueled by growing rumors about Sergio Perez's prospects at Red Bull, especially after a series of underwhelming results and displays.
The scrutiny on Perez has intensified following his accumulation of merely 11 points over the last five races. At 34 years old, the Mexican racer experienced a humiliating early elimination in Q1 at Silverstone, ultimately placing 17th in the competition.
Perez hasn't made it to the top three since his April performance at the Chinese Grand Prix and remains winless this season. Meanwhile, his fellow team member, Max Verstappen, has secured seven wins in a total of 12 races.
Consequently, Perez has fallen to the sixth position in the drivers' standings, trailing behind the drivers from both McLaren and Ferrari, and is now a significant 137 points behind Verstappen.
Perez's lackluster performance coincides with a period where Red Bull is dealing with heightened competition from their adversaries in the latest contests, putting the current world champions only 71 points ahead of Ferrari in the team rankings.
Speculation has been ignited regarding Red Bull's consideration to swap out Perez, especially since he just inked a fresh two-year agreement a month ago. It's understood that Perez's most recent contract includes multiple conditions based on his performance, giving Red Bull the option to terminate his employment, possibly even within this ongoing season.
Perez is facing two upcoming events, the Hungarian and Belgian Grands Prix, as opportunities to make a comeback before the Formula 1 season pauses for its yearly summer break in August.
Racing drivers Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda have been considered potential successors for Perez's position, as they compete for the affiliate team of Red Bull. However, uncertainties regarding Ricciardo's continuity in F1 have arisen due to his inconsistent performances, casting doubts about his suitability for the role. On the other hand, Tsunoda's commendable performance early in the season has secured him a spot with Red Bull until 2025.
Lawson, a 22-year-old New Zealander, steps into the spotlight as he's slated to test drive the RB20 at Silverstone. Following this, it's been scheduled for him to have another go in the latest RB model at Imola, right after the Belgian Grand Prix week.
Red Bull's team leader, Christian Horner, has acknowledged that Perez's present performance level is "unmaintainable," yet he has minimized the importance of Lawson's appearance at Silverstone, referring to it as an "aerodynamic test" that was scheduled well in advance.
"Horner emphasized to Sky Sports that the tests were not arranged spontaneously but have been in the works for a few months already."
Liam serves as our backup and test driver; that's his role. However, for Checo, the weekend has been terribly disappointing.
Analyses have likened Ricciardo's trial at Silverstone the previous year, which eventually led to his unexpected comeback to the F1 lineup with AlphaTauri, taking over Nyck de Vries' spot.
However, the pair of evaluations are notably distinct. A year prior, Ricciardo partook in a test for Pirelli tires, utilizing Red Bull's car for the 2023 season. This allowed him to use the same tire compounds that were in use throughout the season, offering a more equitable basis for comparing his performance to that of the other Red Bull drivers.
Although Lawson's upcoming two evaluations might not be conclusive, it's undeniable that he still has a chance to make an impression on Red Bull and possibly contend for Perez's position.
