Lewis Hamilton Lauds Brad Pitt’s Driving Skills for ‘F1’ Movie at Silverstone: A Behind-the-Scenes Look
Unveiled: Lewis Hamilton's True Impressions of Brad Pitt’s Racing Skills
“These vehicles are designed for film production, yet at their core, they remain true to racing.”
Brad Pitt notably took to the track at Silverstone during the previous year's British Grand Prix to film sequences for the 'F1' movie.
This past weekend, the renowned Hollywood actor and the movie team returned to Silverstone to resume shooting their film.
The response from Lewis Hamilton, who is among the executive producers of the film, regarding Pitt's skills behind the wheel, has now been disclosed.
"Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer, shared with Deadline that they spent nearly three months preparing Brad and Damson Idris, working with them in a range of vehicles."
They commenced their career in Formula 3 before advancing to Formula 2.
"Lewis mentions that they are truly exceptional; they possess an innate athletic talent."
"He was genuinely taken aback by their driving skills."
Last year at Silverstone, Pitt maneuvered a vehicle during the breaks of actual F1 races, in view of the attendees. This vehicle, though appearing to be an F1 car, was in fact an F2 car that had been altered for the appearance.
"Director Joseph Kosinski mentioned, 'Collaborating with Mercedes was actually a brainchild of Toto Wolff.'"
"Everyone seems to express dissatisfaction, arguing that films about racing don't capture the true speed, mainly because the vehicles constructed for these movies are designed for appearance rather than performance. Essentially, they appear accurate, but they don't function like genuine racing cars."
"In an initial gathering, Toto suggested, ‘Base it on a Formula 2 vehicle but give it the appearance of a Formula 1 car,’ hence it incorporates a Formula 2 frame and motor.
"In collaboration with Mercedes, alongside their design crew and aerodynamic experts, we engineered a bespoke body that mirrors the newest version of the Formula 1 vehicle."
"These vehicles were custom-made for the film, featuring 15 integrated camera mounts, along with the necessary recorders, batteries, and transmission devices."
"They're designed for filmmaking purposes, yet at their core, they are essentially racing cars."
The distinctive feature of the movie, titled 'F1', lies in its filming at actual Grand Prix events.
"Kosinski expressed amazement at having Brad and Damson Idris personally behind the wheel for the stunts, highlighting the uniqueness of performing such feats in the presence of an audience and at high speeds. He emphasized the challenge in capturing these moments, noting that the logistics involved were unparalleled in his experience."
"We're filming directly at the Grand Prix events, navigating extremely limited time frames to capture scenes on the race track, amidst practice and qualifying rounds, all while surrounded by hundreds of thousands of spectators."
The plot of the film revolves around Sonny Hayes (portrayed by Pitt), an experienced race car driver who is tempted to return for one final chance to achieve greatness.
In 2023, the British Grand Prix included a unique addition to its paddock: a garage for the imaginary 11th team, known as APXGP.
Over the past weekend, while Lando Norris and Sergio Perez were being interviewed after their race, spectators noticed Pitt participating in a simulated 'post-race interview' scene behind them.
The film will showcase all of the current Formula 1 racers and has been produced in collaboration with Formula 1.
The debut of 'F1' is slated for June 2025.
