Leclerc Triumphs at Home: Uncovering the Standouts and Struggles in the 2024 Monaco GP Driver Ratings
Crash.net's Formula 1 Ratings for the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix: A standout performance from an often-overlooked driver in the midfield.
Charles Leclerc – 10
Leclerc delivered a flawless performance throughout the weekend, securing his inaugural win in his home country. He dominated the qualifying sessions and led from the start in both races, ultimately achieving a victory filled with emotion.
Oscar Piastri – 9
In contrast to his experience at Imola, Piastri found himself in a favorable position on the starting line, right at the front. He maintained a strong challenge against Leclerc for the majority of the race, only to lose some ground as the race neared its end. Nevertheless, it was an impressive weekend that saw him secure his initial top-three placement of the season.
Carlos Sainz – Score: 8
In Monaco, Sainz didn't match Leclerc's performance. Nevertheless, Sainz demonstrated his strategic acumen during the race, signaling to Ferrari his crucial role in supporting Norris. He made it evident that his presence was necessary to prevent Norris from gaining a pit stop advantage over the trailing vehicles.
Lando Norris – 8
Norris missed out on a podium finish due to being outqualified by his McLaren colleague, Piastri, once again.
George Russell – 9
Russell extended his streak of strong qualifying showings in Monaco, now leading Hamilton 7-1 in their qualifying matchups. He kept his cool under considerable pressure from competitors trailing closely behind.
Max Verstappen – 8
Given the challenges faced by Red Bull, Verstappen didn't meet expectations in the qualifying rounds when he grazed the wall while exiting Turn 1, which resulted in him starting the race from the sixth position. Following a pit stop, he was unable to advance further.
Lewis Hamilton – Rating: 7.5
Hamilton's performance took a downturn during qualifying, despite demonstrating strong speed in all three practice sessions. A communication error via team radio prevented him from gaining an advantage over Verstappen for the sixth position.
Yuki Tsunoda – 9
Tsunoda once more had an impressive weekend, successfully making it into Q3. He finished in eighth place, marking another solid performance.
Alex Albon – 9.5
Scoring points at the Monaco Grand Prix has been an uncommon feat for Williams, with the last instance dating back to 2017. Albon delivered an impressive performance during the qualifying rounds. Given the challenging nature of overtaking on this track, it was expected that he would capitalize on his qualifying position to secure a commendable finish.
Pierre Gasly – 9
Gasly was yet another driver who stood out during the qualifying rounds. His performance in Q2, securing the fifth spot, was among the season's most remarkable laps to date.
Fernando Alonso – 6
Alonso experienced a continued decrease in performance at the Monaco Grand Prix, being outpaced in qualifying by his teammate Stroll for the fourth occasion this season. During the race, he adopted a team-oriented strategy, slowing down the competitors to provide Stroll with a better chance. Nonetheless, the effort proved fruitless as Stroll suffered a tire puncture post his pit stop.
Daniel Ricciardo – 6
Once dominant on the Monaco tracks, Ricciardo's recent performance falls short, especially when compared to Tsunoda's showing this weekend.
Valtteri Bottas – 6.5
So far this season, Bottas has outqualified Zhou in all eight races. During a weekend when Sauber struggled significantly with speed, Bottas managed to provide one of the rare highlights by overtaking Sargeant on the race day.
Lance Stroll – 6
Stroll was having a strong weekend until he made an error at the Nouvelle Chicane, hitting the barrier and consequently getting a flat tire.
Logan Sargeant – 5.5
Sargeant's performance in the Williams remains less impressive. However, he managed a smart move by overtaking Zhou during a moment they were both being lapped.
Zhou Guanyu – Rating: 5.5
Zhou trailed behind Bottas by half a second in the qualifying rounds, despite the fact that Bottas had missed almost all of the third free practice session. On the day of the race, he, along with several others, found himself caught behind Alonso, unable to advance.
Esteban Ocon – 4
The response to Ocon's first lap maneuver past Gasly has been overly dramatized, especially by Alpine's head, Bruno Famin. It was an excessive move. Ocon miscalculated, spoiling his own performance in the race, and compromising his prospects for the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix due to the penalty he received.
Sergio Perez – 3
Perez experienced his typical mid-season slump in Europe, failing to advance past the first qualifying round. An early-race collision that led to his retirement was judged as a racing incident.
Nico Hulkenberg – 6.5
Hulkenberg consistently outperformed Magnussen during the qualifying rounds. Unfortunately, his race concluded prematurely due to circumstances beyond his control.
Kevin Magnussen – 3
Magnussen narrowly escaped receiving an additional penalty for his first-lap collision with Perez. Although Perez might have allowed more space, Magnussen, who had a clear line of sight, possibly could have slowed down to avoid the incident. Nevertheless, the FIA deemed it a racing incident.
