Leclerc Cautions Ferrari: Recent Upgrades ‘Not Enough’ for Season-Long Race Wins
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari’s recent upgrade is ‘insufficient’ for ‘winning races consistently until the season concludes.’
"Is it sufficient to secure victories for the remainder of the season? Not at this point, but we have made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by effectively using a one-stop strategy to outperform McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, indicating that McLaren boasted the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major enhancement package for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the race at Monza, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "be cautious."
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's conditions were uniquely suited to our car at that time. Similarly, Monza is a very distinctive and unique circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we had another upgrade that I believe brought us closer to McLaren's performance level. However, I don't think it's sufficient to make us the leading car for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
"We still have a significant amount of work ahead of us, yet I'm genuinely pleased to have secured one here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has had a challenging period since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
Likewise, in the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has lowered expectations, referencing similar discussions about a championship bid after his Monaco victory.
"This weekend we performed exceptionally well, but the situation in Baku might be quite different, and Singapore will present another unique challenge. Therefore, it's important for us to recalibrate our approach. We managed to adjust effectively from Monaco to Montreal, but the transition between those two races demonstrated significant variation from one weekend to the next."
"We experienced three or four of the most challenging races of the season while attempting to figure out the issues with our car. We're optimistic that we won't face such difficult races in the future, and I believe that won't happen."
"However, it's crucial to ensure that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? I don't believe so yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
