Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: New Upgrades Not Enough for 2024 Championship Push
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent upgrade is ‘insufficient’ to ‘secure victories for the remainder of the season’
"Will it be sufficient to clinch race wins for the rest of the season? I don't believe so at this point, but we have made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must continue to enhance their performance in order to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by effectively using a one-stop strategy, outpacing McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Before Piastri took his second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's status as the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
"We need to proceed with care," he stated. "Following the Monaco race, I believe we've encountered the four toughest races of the season, as Monaco's track suited our car's setup at that moment. Monza, too, is a track with unique and distinct characteristics."
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We used a rear wing designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we had another upgrade that I believe brought us closer to McLaren's performance. However, I don't think this will make us the dominant car for the rest of the season on different tracks."
"We still have plenty of work ahead, but I'm thrilled to have one here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced difficulties since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari is trailing Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the hype, referencing previous discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different challenge, and Singapore will also be unique. Therefore, we need to adjust our approach. We successfully adapted from Monaco to Montreal, and as evidenced by the significant differences between these two weekends, each event can vary greatly."
"We experienced three or four of the toughest races of the season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face such challenging races again, and I believe that won't happen."
"However, it's crucial to ensure that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as this would be unrealistic."
"Did we make progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we have certainly moved in the right direction."
