Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Monza Victory Not a Silver Bullet for Season-Long Success
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are ‘insufficient’ for ‘winning races for the remainder of the season.’ He remarked, "Is this enough to secure victories until the season concludes? I believe not yet, although we have made significant progress in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance if they wish to consistently compete with McLaren for the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, allowing him to triumph over McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren possessed the fastest vehicle at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major set of improvements for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the race at Monza, Leclerc advised Ferrari to exercise "caution".
"We need to exercise caution," he remarked. "Following the Monaco race, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season. Monaco's unique characteristics suited our car at that moment. Similarly, Monza is a very distinct and specialized circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few turns on this track. We had a rear wing designed specifically for this circuit, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren's performance. However, I don't think this will make us the leading car for the remainder of the season on other tracks."
"We still have a significant amount of work ahead of us, but I'm nonetheless very pleased to have achieved this in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced difficulties since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized expectations, pointing to similar discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"This weekend, we performed exceptionally well, but Baku could be a completely different scenario, and Singapore may also present different challenges. We need to adjust our approach accordingly. We successfully adapted from Monaco to Montreal, and as demonstrated, there was a significant shift between those two weekends."
"We then experienced some of the toughest races of the season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face such challenging races in the future, and I don't believe we will."
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient for us to start winning races for the remainder of the season? I don't believe so, but we've certainly moved in the right direction."
