Lando Norris Retracts Apology Demand from Verstappen After Austrian GP Clash: A Resolved Misunderstanding
Lando Norris changes stance regarding Max Verstappen's apology: "We've discussed the matter"
"I don't believe he owes me an apology. I don't see a reason for him to say sorry."
Lando Norris has reversed his earlier call for Max Verstappen to issue an apology after their intense encounter at the Austrian Grand Prix, having had a discussion with the Red Bull F1 racer.
Norris and Verstappen made contact as they were heading into the third turn during the 64th lap of the competition at the Red Bull Ring.
Verstappen received a 10-second penalty for his involvement in the incident, yet it had no significant impact on his position as he stayed in fifth place, whereas Norris had to exit the race.
Norris expressed his annoyance post-race, stating that their friendship would suffer if Verstappen fails to offer an apology.
During the FIA press briefing at Silverstone, Norris disclosed that the matter was addressed with Verstappen.
"Yes, we have," Norris confirmed in response to inquiries about whether he had conversed with Verstappen.
"Frankly, he didn't have to say sorry," Norris mentioned. "Looking back at some of the messages I sent from the pen post-race… I was just upset then."
There was an intense rush of adrenaline and a whirlwind of emotions. I found myself saying things that, upon reflection, I didn't truly stand behind, particularly as the week progressed. It was a challenging situation. The event that concluded both of our races was quite regrettable in nature.
"The incident wasn't a clear strike or an evident collision. It involved an extremely minor touch, yet it resulted in significant adverse outcomes for both parties, particularly for me. There's no need for him to offer an apology."
"I'm not anticipating an apology from him, nor do I believe one is necessary. After reviewing what happened, I consider it to have been competitive racing, occasionally pushing the limits, but we've discussed it. We've had a conversation and both agree that we're ready to race again."
Norris emphasized his great pleasure in battling Verstappen in Austria, characterizing it as "challenging" and "at the edge."
"He elaborated on their preparation, noting, "We've reviewed everything multiple times and I've gained a lot of insight. Much of it was as I expected, based on my prior experience. Competing against various opponents at the forefront is a different ball game compared to the challenges we faced slightly behind the pack over the past year. Moreover, Max employs a unique approach to racing unlike many of his competitors, which is partly why he's achieved champion status. After reflecting on all this, I'm eager to hit the track this weekend with the aim of outperforming my previous efforts."
"His racing style is evident. It's challenging and always pushes the boundaries. That's precisely what appeals to us, what I personally adore. I genuinely relished our entire battle. Naturally, it's unfortunate that it concluded in that manner. Besides that, everything is as transparent as it appears on television. I'm looking forward to hitting the track again this weekend."
