Lando Norris Advised to ‘Get His Elbows Out’ Against Max Verstappen’s Intimidation at Silverstone
Lando Norris suggests a more aggressive approach to counter Max Verstappen's intimidating presence
“Several drivers, such as Hamilton, mentioned that 'your mindset changes when racing against Max'”
Lando Norris has been encouraged to be more aggressive at Silverstone if he finds himself in another confrontation with Max Verstappen.
Norris was furious with his friend Verstappen following a collision at the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend, which cut short his promising race.
For Verstappen, it was another instance of assertive driving, which resulted in a 10-second penalty. Despite this, he left Austria having increased his championship lead over Norris, who finished in second place.
Karun Chandhok mentioned to Sky Sports that in recent years, Max has shown himself to be a determined and relentless competitor, much like Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna were in their time.
"Lando will keep that in mind."
"It is clear that during that specific event, Max was the one who shifted and strayed from his path. He veered to the left."
“He’s not the pioneer in this regard. Last year, Carlos Sainz and Max did the same thing.”
“We observed it with Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton. They managed to steer clear of any collisions.
"It seemed like a rough maneuver. Max appeared to be attempting to push Lando aside to prevent him from gaining an advantage going into the next turn. That’s my interpretation of the situation."
"Max rightfully accepted responsibility and the punishment."
"Next time Lando and Max are racing closely, Lando might remember this moment and wonder if he needs to leave more space for Max than he would for other drivers."
The inquiry was raised: does Verstappen of Red Bull deliberately aim to create an ‘intimidation factor’ with his closest competitors?
Chandhok responded: "In my opinion, he has accomplished that."
"Several drivers, such as Hamilton, mentioned that 'you approach racing differently when competing against Max'."
"Senna, Schumacher, and other legendary drivers excelled at getting inside their competitors' heads before they even started racing side by side."
Chandhok commented on their altercation last weekend, stating: “This situation was unlike the incident with Lewis at Silverstone in 2021 when he aggressively placed his car's nose ahead and declared, ‘I won’t back down’."
"Two drivers were both attempting to occupy the same section of the track in a difficult manner, resulting in an awkward collision involving their rear wheels."
Significantly, McLaren racer Norris has been advised to meet aggression with aggression at the upcoming F1 British Grand Prix this weekend.
Chandhok mentioned that Lando had a real shot at winning in the past three races, though he ultimately didn't secure a victory in any of them.
"A win on home turf at the British Grand Prix? Battling head-to-head with Max? I anticipate he'll be more aggressive."
