Jos Verstappen’s Blistering Rebuke of Red Bull and Horner: A Demand for Change After Dutch GP Disappointment
Frustrated Jos Verstappen lacks confidence in Christian Horner's ability to resolve a "critical issue"
Jos Verstappen insists Red Bull "shouldn't constantly downplay everything"
Jos Verstappen has unleashed a fierce critique of Red Bull and Christian Horner following the F1 Dutch Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen, his son, secured the second spot in his home race, falling behind Lando Norris, yet it was the significant gap to Norris that raised eyebrows.
Norris clinched a victory with a lead of 22 seconds for McLaren, while Verstappen heads into the upcoming weekend at Monza without a win in the last five grand prix races.
"The father of the F1 champion, known for his frank remarks, expressed to Bild that anything beyond 20 seconds is a significant letdown."
"Max was always at a disadvantage for victory. This becomes apparent once you deconstruct the vehicle's design."
Red Bull opted for components previously utilized during the season to navigate the challenges of the Zandvoort circuit.
"That sums it up," Jos Verstappen commented. "The team made several incorrect decisions.
You should engage in self-reflection and not constantly overlook or ignore things.
"Now is the moment – if we haven't already surpassed it – to reflect inwardly."
"The valuable members are departing from the group. I'm quite displeased with the current situation."
Adrian Newey, the chief technology officer, is set to leave Red Bull in the coming year, potentially moving to a competitor, whereas Jonathan Wheatley, the sporting director, will take on the role of team principal at Audi.
Jos Verstappen emphasized, "There's no way to downplay it now, we're facing a critical situation."
"Max isn't going to be content with a car of that caliber. It's now Horner's responsibility to steer the team in the right direction."
Verstappen Senior was questioned on whether he believes in Horner's capacity to lead the team back to victory.
"Currently, my answer is no, though I could find myself taken aback," Jos Verstappen remarked.
"Significant transformations are necessary. There needs to be a complete shift in mindset."
The connection between the team principal of Red Bull and the parent of their leading driver has been tense throughout the year.
At the start of this season, the elder Verstappen voiced his opinion that Horner should be dismissed from his position.
Verstappen's father notably went online to counteract the speculation that his son deliberately reduced his speed and didn't fully utilize his vehicle, due to the belief that he couldn't surpass Norris.
A post on social media stated: "Max didn't have to give it his all. Finishing in 2nd place, whether it's by 4 seconds or 23 seconds, earns you the same points."
However, Jos Verstappen responded sarcastically, saying, “Then you haven't grasped it yet.”
