Jorge Martin Reacts to Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez’s Aragon Crash as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend as he maintained his remarkable consistency, whereas Francesco Bagnaia experienced a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit in the World Championship standings behind Bagnaia, who had won both the Sprint and the Grand Prix in Austria.
However, Bagnaia had a rough weekend in terms of scoring points, while Martin continued his streak of securing second place in both races, making it six consecutive second-place finishes since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race collision involving Alex Marquez. Despite a subpar start, Bagnaia made his way through the pack and reached Marquez's back tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this mistake, but the two collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to strongly favor any particular viewpoint.
"It's not easy," Martin mentioned. "You ought to question Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it’s hard to see clearly since there was a lot of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what happened to Joe Roberts in Moto2. Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez, and ultimately there was contact."
"I really hope they're alright. After the crash, it looked like they were near the bikes, so I'm wishing that they're in good shape for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center. Scans revealed that he hadn't broken any bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race while nursing a leg injury sustained during a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will again have just one week to recover after the Aragon race in preparation for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who emerged victorious in both races held there in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his competitor’s home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
