Jeep Unleashes Wagoneer S EV: A New Challenger Emerges for Tesla Model Y’s Throne
Stellantis Unveils Teaser for 2024 Electric Jeep Wagoneer S, Aiming to Compete with Tesla Model Y, with Official Unveil Date on May 30
A narrator proclaims Jeep's challenge to the top-selling electric vehicle brand in the U.S., initiating a competition between a prototype Wagoneer S and a Model Y Performance. The footage features Jeep touting a 0-60 mph acceleration of 3.4 seconds for the Wagoneer S (accounting for initial rollout), in contrast to Tesla's officially stated 3.5-second acceleration for the Model Y Performance on their website.
2024 Model of the Jeep Wagoneer S
The Wagoneer S sets a new speed record for Jeep, achieving the fastest acceleration from 0-60 mph among all the brand's production vehicles, surpassing the previous record held by the gasoline-powered Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, according to the manufacturer. The Trackhawk trails the Wagoneer S by 0.1 second, similar to the Model Y Performance's lag.
The Trackhawk remains the leader in terms of sheer muscle. Although commendable, the Wagoneer S's output of 600 horsepower and 617 pound-feet of torque doesn't quite match up to the 707 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque produced by the Trackhawk's supercharged V-8 engine. It's worth noting that these figures pertain to the Wagoneer S in its pre-production phase, which also boasts a projected distance of over 300 miles on a single charge.
In September 2022, Jeep unveiled a concept version of the Wagoneer S, which was presented at the same time as the tougher Recon off-road vehicle, referred to as the Wrangler's "sibling." The final model of the Wagoneer S is set to be fully disclosed on May 30, and it is expected to hit the market in the autumn of this year.
At present, Jeep appears to be concentrating on the development of plug-in hybrid vehicles. The company has announced that a plug-in hybrid version of the Gladiator, known as the Gladiator 4xe, will soon be available in the United States. Meanwhile, the European market can look forward to the 4xe model of the newly unveiled Avenger crossover. Additionally, in this year's collection of concept vehicles for the celebrated Easter Jeep Safari, Jeep opted for traditional engines instead of going fully electric, demonstrating their current preference for hybrids over pure EVs.
