Inside Sergio Perez’s New Red Bull Contract: Horner Unveils “1+1” Deal Dynamics Amidst Performance Pressures
Christian Horner discloses significant information regarding Sergio Perez's latest Red Bull agreement
Christian Horner has disclosed significant information regarding Sergio Perez's latest Formula 1 agreement with Red Bull.
Before the Canadian Grand Prix took place, Red Bull announced their decision to retain Perez, revealing that the Mexican racer had agreed to a fresh two-year deal to continue as Max Verstappen's partner up until the conclusion of 2026.
Nonetheless, Horner, the team principal of Red Bull, has acknowledged that the agreement with Perez is effectively a "1+1" arrangement, indicating that Red Bull has some leeway if Perez does not meet expectations.
During the Canada weekend, it was revealed by Red Bull's affiliated team, RB, that Yuki Tsunoda would continue his tenure with the Faenza-based team through the 2025 season.
In a conversation with Viaplay during an event in Montreal, Horner clarified the rationale behind the contracts.
"Horner stated that all of them are drivers for Red Bull."
"We've opted to renew Checo's contract for an additional year. Simultaneously, we've chosen to activate Yuki's option as he's currently performing exceptionally well at RB. Indeed, he will remain with us for an extra year."
Horner further commented on Perez’s agreement, stating, "It's simple math, 1+1 equals 2, indicating it's a contract for two years.
"Like any agreement, it contains numerous details, which naturally remain confidential between the driver and their team."
Perez entered the new season facing the challenge of keeping his position with Red Bull, but he kicked off the campaign impressively.
Recently, a significant drop in performance has sparked new inquiries regarding his career prospects.
Following Perez's back-to-back Q1 eliminations and his withdrawal from Sunday's chaotic and rain-soaked Montreal race, Horner encouraged his racer to make a swift comeback.
"Checo had a terrible weekend, and evidently, we sustained some damage," Horner conveyed to Sky Sports. "He must make a strong comeback in Barcelona."
"Fortunately, Ferrari faced a setback and failed to score any points, which somewhat relieved us of pressure. However, it's crucial that both of our cars earn points. We managed to dodge a bullet this time, but it's essential for Checo to return to his early-year form, starting from Barcelona and moving forward."
