Horner Clears the Air on “Childish” Radio Remark After Verstappen-Hamilton Clash at Hungarian GP
Christian Horner explains the "childish" comment about Max Verstappen made by Gianpiero Lambiase following an incident with Lewis Hamilton at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Christian Horner has explained Gianpiero Lambiase's comment, which seemed to criticize Max Verstappen after his incident with Lewis Hamilton at the Hungarian Grand Prix, labeling it as "childish."
Verstappen expressed significant frustration regarding the progression of his race, airing his grievances through the team's radio communication.
Verstappen's engineer, known as 'GP', appeared to be growing increasingly frustrated with Verstappen's grievances.
Following his clash with Hamilton at the first turn on the 63rd lap, Verstappen reported via the team radio, saying, "He changed direction while braking!"
GP responded, "I refuse to engage in a radio argument with the rival teams, Max. We'll leave it to the officials to handle. Arguing over the radio is immature. It's simply childish."
Horner clarified Lambiase's statement, emphasizing that the "childish" comment was not aimed at Verstappen.
"Horner indicated that GP's comments at that time weren't aimed at Max, but rather at other drivers who were voicing complaints about penalties on the radio," he explained in Hungary, where reporters from Crash.net are onsite in the paddock.
"At that moment, I believe the term GP wasn't actually referring to Max. Clearly, others are instigating penalties since it's apparent that the stewards are paying attention to the radio communications as well."
"They've shared a partnership for eight years, and indeed, there are aspects of today's race we could have improved on. However, it's a topic we'll discuss collectively as a team."
Horner acknowledged his awareness of Verstappen's concerns and stated that any problems with his race engineer would be addressed privately.
"It's clear to everyone that there's a need to enhance our performance, and everyone is putting in the effort to achieve that. Any necessary conversations will take place privately," he said.
Max was feeling irritated, which is comprehensible since he maintains a straightforward channel of communication with his engineer. They will address this matter in their private conversation.
A point of conversation centered around Verstappen engaging in virtual racing activities until 3 in the morning.
The driver from the Netherlands competed for Team Redline in a virtual 24-hour race at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.
Verstappen has previously engaged in virtual racing during a race weekend.
When questioned regarding Verstappen's nocturnal activities, Horner stated, "He's fully aware of what it takes to compete in a Grand Prix, and we have faith in his decision-making."
