Helmut Marko Mocks McLaren’s ‘Sportsmanship’ After Costly Strategy Call at Italian Grand Prix
Helmut Marko takes a dig at McLaren with a comment about "sportsmanship" during the Italian Grand Prix.
“I’m grateful for that, as it somewhat improves our circumstances."
Helmut Marko humorously expressed his gratitude to McLaren for their "sportsmanship" following their loss of the Italian Grand Prix F1 race win.
McLaren is currently trailing Red Bull by only eight points in the Formula 1 constructors’ championship.
The Woking team might have been at the top of the rankings after the Monza race if they had achieved a first and second place finish.
Nevertheless, opting to change Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to a two-stop strategy proved to be an expensive choice.
This enabled Charles Leclerc to move into first place in the race, maintaining his position using a one-stop strategy.
By finishing in third place, Norris managed to cut Max Verstappen's lead in the drivers' championship by just eight points, bringing the gap down to 62 points as they head into the Azerbaijan race.
In an interview with the Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf, Marko refuted claims that the outcome was "disappointing" and took the opportunity to ridicule McLaren.
"Are we disappointed with the outcome? Absolutely not," he remarked. "We anticipated this to some extent and I want to extend my congratulations to Ferrari for their win and express my gratitude to McLaren for their fair play."
“I’m grateful for that, and it improves our circumstances a little."
Red Bull had a tough weekend, with Verstappen managing to secure just a sixth-place finish.
Placing sixth is his poorest race result since the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2022.
As Red Bull faces significant challenges, their position in both championships is at risk, especially with the upcoming races in Baku and Singapore, which are anticipated to be unfavorable for them.
The positive update for Red Bull is that they have a month-long break before the American leg of races, providing them with essential time to possibly discover solutions that could enable Verstappen to secure his fourth world championship this year.
Marko is still sure that Verstappen will keep being a game-changer in 2024.
"He also noted that Max remains the top driver in terms of both mental strength and overall quality."
