Helmut Marko Jests at McLaren’s Misstep: ‘Sportsmanship’ Jibe Highlights Red Bull’s Italian GP Fortunes
Helmut Marko takes a dig at McLaren regarding "sportsmanship" at the Italian Grand Prix, stating, "I value that, and it slightly improves our position."
Helmut Marko humorously expressed gratitude to McLaren for their "sportsmanship" following their loss of the Italian Grand Prix F1 race win.
McLaren trails Red Bull by only eight points in the Formula 1 constructors' championship.
The team from Woking might have topped the leaderboard after the Monza race if they had achieved a first and second place finish.
Nevertheless, their choice to move Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to a two-stop plan proved to be expensive.
This enabled Charles Leclerc to seize the front position in the race, maintaining his lead with a one-stop strategy.
Norris finishing in third place resulted in him narrowing Max Verstappen’s advantage in the drivers' championship by just eight points, bringing the gap to 62 points before the Azerbaijan race.
In an interview with the Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf, Marko refuted the claim that it was a "disappointing result" and then proceeded to ridicule McLaren.
"A letdown? Absolutely not," he commented. "We had somewhat anticipated this outcome, and I extend my congratulations to Ferrari for their win and my gratitude to McLaren for their fair play."
“I’m grateful for that; it improves our situation somewhat."
Red Bull had a tough weekend as Verstappen managed to secure only a sixth-place finish.
His sixth-place result is his lowest finish in a race since the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2022.
Red Bull is facing significant challenges, putting their standings in both championships at risk, especially with the upcoming races in Baku and Singapore, which are anticipated to be unfavorable for them.
The positive development for Red Bull is that there is a one-month break before the series of races in America, providing them with essential time to possibly discover strategies to enable Verstappen to secure his fourth world championship this year.
Marko is sure that Verstappen will keep being the decisive factor in 2024.
He stated that Max remains the most mentally resilient and highest-quality driver in the competition.
