Helmut Marko Jabs McLaren’s Strategy Misstep at Italian Grand Prix, Praises ‘Sportsmanship
Helmut Marko takes a dig at McLaren's "sportsmanship" at the Italian Grand Prix
"I value that, and it slightly improves our position."
Helmut Marko humorously expressed his gratitude to McLaren for their "sportsmanship" following their loss of the Italian Grand Prix F1 race win.
McLaren is now trailing Red Bull by only eight points in the Formula 1 constructors' championship.
The Woking team might have topped the leaderboard following the Monza race if they had achieved a first and second place finish.
Nevertheless, their choice to change Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to a two-stop strategy proved to be expensive.
This enabled Charles Leclerc to move into first place in the race, where he maintained his position using a single pit stop strategy.
Norris secured third place, narrowing Max Verstappen's advantage in the drivers' championship by just eight points. Verstappen's lead now stands at 62 points as they head to Azerbaijan.
In an interview with the Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf, Marko rejected the notion that it was a "disappointing result" and proceeded to ridicule McLaren.
"Was the outcome disappointing? Absolutely not," he responded. "We anticipated this to some extent, and I want to extend my congratulations to Ferrari for their win and express my gratitude to McLaren for their fair play."
"I’m grateful for that; it improves our circumstances somewhat."
Red Bull had a tough weekend, with Verstappen managing to secure only a sixth-place finish.
His sixth-place finish is his lowest on-track result since the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2022.
Due to Red Bull's significant difficulties, their standing in both championships is at risk, especially with the upcoming races in Baku and Singapore, which are not anticipated to be favorable for them.
The positive development for Red Bull is that they have a month-long break before the series of races in the United States. This interval provides them with valuable time to possibly discover solutions that could enable Verstappen to secure his fourth world championship this year.
Marko is still sure that Verstappen will stand out in 2024.
“He’s still the top driver both mentally and in terms of quality,” he remarked.
