Helmut Marko Jabs McLaren’s ‘Sportsmanship’ After Costly Strategy at Italian Grand Prix: Red Bull’s Championship Lead Tightens
Helmut Marko takes a jab at McLaren with a "sportsmanship" remark during the Italian Grand Prix, saying, "I value that, and it somewhat improves our position."
Helmut Marko humorously expressed his gratitude towards McLaren for their “sportsmanship” after they squandered the chance to win the Italian Grand Prix in Formula 1.
McLaren has closed the gap to Red Bull in the F1 constructors' championship, now trailing by only eight points.
The team from Woking might have topped the rankings following the Monza race if they had managed to achieve a first and second place finish.
Nonetheless, the choice to change Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to a two-stop plan proved to be expensive.
This enabled Charles Leclerc to seize the race lead and maintain it, utilizing a one-stop strategy.
Lando Norris secured third place, which cut Max Verstappen's lead in the drivers' championship by just eight points, bringing the gap down to 62 points as they head into the Azerbaijan race.
In an interview with the Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf, Marko downplayed the notion that it was a "disappointing result" and took a jab at McLaren.
"Was it a disappointing outcome? Absolutely not," he stated. "We anticipated this to some extent, and I would like to offer my congratulations to Ferrari for their win and express my gratitude to McLaren for their fair play."
"Thank you, that really improves our circumstances."
Red Bull had a tough weekend as Verstappen managed to secure only the sixth position.
His sixth-place finish is his poorest performance on the track since the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2022.
Due to Red Bull's significant difficulties, their position in both championship races is at risk, especially with the upcoming races in Baku and Singapore, which are not anticipated to favor their performance.
Positive developments for Red Bull include a month-long break before the American leg of the racing season, providing them with essential time to possibly discover strategies that could enable Verstappen to secure his fourth world championship this year.
Marko is assured that Verstappen will keep being a game-changer in 2024.
"He added that Max remains the most mentally and technically proficient driver on the grid."
