Helmut Marko Issues Warning: Red Bull Can’t Rely Solely on Max Verstappen’s Brilliance Amid McLaren Challenge
Helmut Marko cautions that Max Verstappen cannot push himself to the maximum for an entire season.
Helmut Marko worries that Red Bull cannot continue to depend solely on Max Verstappen's exceptional talent.
Red Bull Formula 1 advisor Helmut Marko cautioned Max Verstappen, stating that he "cannot maintain peak performance for an entire season" after his recent victory at the Spanish Grand Prix.
In a remarkable display, Verstappen secured his seventh win of the 2024 F1 season, successfully holding off a challenge from McLaren driver Lando Norris.
It could be said that McLaren had the faster car during the race, but Verstappen still managed to secure the win.
This year, McLaren has often shown superior speed, as seen in Miami and Canada, but Verstappen has consistently emerged victorious.
Marko has voiced worries that Red Bull may not be able to continue depending solely on Verstappen's exceptional talent this year, especially given McLaren's impressive performance.
In an interview with the Austrian outlet OE24, Marko mentioned that Max is also unable to push himself to the limit for an entire season. He added that the overtaking move Max used to take the lead was remarkable, even by his standards.
"Max's victories are attributed to his confidence rather than the quality of the car."
In the Red Bull team, Sergio Perez experienced a challenging weekend.
Perez narrowly defeated Alpine’s Pierre Gasly to secure eighth place in Barcelona.
Evaluating Perez's performance, Marko admitted that the current close competition in F1 is creating additional challenges.
"He began the race from a much lower position," he remarked. "But it's accurate. Given how competitive things are now, there is no room for any shortcomings."
Even though Perez faced challenges over the weekend, Red Bull managed to increase their advantage in the drivers' championship.
Consequently, Marko is pleased with Mercedes’ enhanced performance, as it means they can now compete with Ferrari and McLaren, who are Red Bull’s primary competitors this season.
He stated that Mercedes being present now would be beneficial for their world championship calculations.
