Helmut Marko Criticizes ‘Unnecessarily Fierce’ Verstappen-Norris Clash in Dramatic Austrian GP
Helmut Marko describes the Max Verstappen-Lando Norris incident as overly aggressive.
Helmut Marko shares his perspective on the altercation between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.
Helmut Marko characterized the clash between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris as 'overly aggressive' after an eventful Austrian Grand Prix.
During Lap 64, Verstappen and Norris clashed at Turn 3 while competing for the lead.
Verstappen drifted a bit to the left while braking, moving into Norris’ trajectory.
The collision led to both drivers getting punctures, which allowed George Russell to secure a surprising win at the Red Bull Ring.
Max Verstappen received a 10-second penalty for his involvement in the incident, but it did not affect his final placement, as he still finished in fifth place.
In contrast, Norris had to withdraw from the race because of sustained damage.
Reflecting on the race, Marko mentioned to ServusTV: "We didn't win because of multiple reasons."
The mishap during our pit stop allowed Lando to get within DRS range. We anticipated that the hard tyres would perform better, but they did not. The temperatures were cooler than we had predicted.
"Lando had fresh tires during his final stint, whereas we were running on used ones, which played a role. Additionally, Max experienced a lock-up in Turn 4 following his pit stop. These factors combined made our situation more challenging."
Marko admitted that Red Bull might have needed to step in since Norris was being scrutinized for track limit violations and subsequently received a five-second penalty right after their collision on Lap 64.
Marko commented that he believed both drivers were overly aggressive.
"Perhaps we should have stepped in too, given that we were aware of an ongoing investigation into Lando and the track limits. However, we were still uncertain if any penalties would follow."
"Looking back, you might say, 'Alright, we should have let him pass.' However, let's focus on the positives: we extended our advantage in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships."
"The battle was intense initially, but it eventually deteriorated. Instead of concentrating on a fair conclusion, it turned into a dispute over braking points and track limits."
