**Helmut Marko Comments on Mercedes’ Controversial Front Wing Amid Red Bull Suspicion**
Helmut Marko commented that he wasn't shocked by the situation, as he speculated whether Red Bull had prompted the FIA to scrutinize Mercedes' recent front wing design.
Helmut Marko has refuted claims that Red Bull asked the FIA to examine Mercedes' latest front wing design in Formula 1.
Mercedes has experienced a boost in their performance after debuting a new front wing in Monaco, and they delivered their best weekend of the season to date at the recent Canadian Grand Prix.
George Russell secured both Mercedes’ initial pole position and podium finish for the year by coming in third place, while his teammate Lewis Hamilton achieved his top performance of 2024, finishing in fourth place.
The German publication Auto Motor und Sport has reported that Red Bull is becoming increasingly wary of the front wings utilized by their competitors, as discussions about a new flexi-wing controversy in Formula 1 intensify.
When questioned about the validity of the allegations that Red Bull requested the FIA to review Mercedes’ latest design, Marko responded to the Austrian outlet OE24: “That’s not accurate.”
"They've introduced a new front wing, and the television footage from Montreal clearly shows that the wings on Russell and Hamilton's cars are visibly flexing."
"It’s not surprising that the wings had sufficient strength when they were given the green light."
"I can't recall the number of times we had to inspect our wings. There is a specific protocol involving weights that ensures a wing remains rigid."
“It’s a common tactic to optimize everything to the maximum extent just enough to pass the technical check. When the race is underway, the wing lowers, resulting in improved aerodynamics.”
Marko announced that F1 teams will face new FIA inspections before the forthcoming Spanish and Austrian Grands Prix.
The 81-year-old Austrian mentioned that the issue has repeatedly surfaced when the distortion was clearly seen in the TV footage.
"Everything went smoothly in Montreal. There will be new inspections for Barcelona and Spielberg, among other locations, and they need to meet the required standards again. Naturally, the competition is closely monitoring this, not just our team."
