Hamilton Concedes to Russell in F1 Qualifying Battle: “I Don’t Anticipate Being Ahead This Year
Lewis Hamilton gave an astonishing response to his 1-7 qualifying loss to George Russell in F1, stating he doubts he'll outperform George Russell in future qualifying rounds this season.
Lewis Hamilton expressed disappointment following his recent Formula 1 qualifying loss to George Russell at the Monaco Grand Prix, stating he doesn't anticipate surpassing his Mercedes teammate again this season.
Following an impressive speed during the practice sessions, Hamilton's results declined during the final stages of Q3.
Russell has once more outperformed Hamilton, extending his lead to 7-1 in their direct qualifying matchups.
The seven-time world champion has been struggling with performance, especially during Saturday events, and is facing the possibility of being outperformed in qualifying by a teammate for the first time since 2014.
Reflecting on the qualifying session, Hamilton clearly expressed his disappointment, pointing out that Russell's advantage came from having the new front wing, which he implied was a significant factor in their differing performances.
"Absolutely, absolutely. Fantastic, the day before. We've put in significant effort to enhance this vehicle," he commented.
Right from the start, the sensation was positive, and we found ourselves in a competitive position both yesterday and today in the morning. We didn't implement any major modifications. The team put in significant effort at the factory, focusing on delivering enhancements for the last two weekends, including one for this event. However, we have just a single upgrade, which is currently with George.
"I expected it would be challenging to surpass George in qualifications since he possesses the [enhanced] part. It's encouraging to witness that we are introducing improvements."
Hamilton felt notably disappointed with his qualifying performance, especially since he was outpaced by Russell once more.
The 39-year-old stated surprisingly that he does not expect to outperform Russell during any of the Saturday events throughout this year.
He mentioned, "I don't expect to outperform George in qualifying, especially this year. We must continue to strive."
Hamilton found himself bewildered by his inability to match his practice performance during the qualifying rounds.
He led the first practice session and then secured a spot among the top three in the subsequent two sessions.
"When it came to the qualifying round, I was baffled," he continued. "It seems I'm automatically down by two tenths before even starting the qualifying. That's certainly aggravating.
"I didn't request this. My driving hasn't changed at all. The laps are actually excellent. I'm not sure what it is. Somehow, there's just something missing."
