George Russell Unfazed by Future Mercedes Teammate Speculation: ‘It Doesn’t Matter Who’s Alongside You
George Russell’s opinion on his future F1 teammate: ‘Whoever it is, it’s fine’
George Russell is willing to team up with any driver on the F1 grid at Mercedes.
George Russell has once again expressed his openness to any driver joining him at Mercedes as his Formula 1 teammate for 2025, as long as the team is unified in their goals.
It remains uncertain who will partner with Russell next year, as Mercedes has not yet made a choice.
Mercedes has openly expressed their interest in signing Max Verstappen for the next season. However, this seems improbable as he is under contract until the conclusion of 2028.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who is currently a junior driver for Mercedes, is said to be the leading candidate for the position.
Carlos Sainz is still a potential candidate, although it appears he may have no choice but to sign with Alpine, Sauber, or Williams.
In a conversation before the British Grand Prix, Russell was inquired about the possibility of partnering with Sainz.
He responded, "To be honest, I’d be open to anyone joining. I've been fortunate to have Lewis as a teammate for the past three years, and we've had some fantastic competition over the last couple of seasons."
"As a driver, I believe it's crucial to maintain a positive rapport between both parties to foster team spirit and ensure everyone is working towards the same goal."
“At the end of the day, when you enter your garage, put on your helmet, and get into your car, it doesn’t really matter who’s in the seat next to you.”
Russell has had a fantastic year individually, securing Mercedes' first victory since 2022 in the most recent race in Austria.
He has usually outperformed Lewis Hamilton, holding a 9-2 advantage in their qualifying matchups.
Nevertheless, he rejected claims that he hasn't received sufficient recognition for his performance this year.
“Honestly, no, not at all. I believe the outcomes are clear enough on their own, and there's no need for me to elaborate,” he remarked.
Many drivers often emphasize that actions on the track speak louder than words. Reflecting on this season, I believe it has been one of my best in terms of personal performance and seizing opportunities as they arise.
"Naturally, there's extensive discussion surrounding the second position, which is to be expected and quite thrilling. Mercedes, as one of the top-performing teams in the sport, has a seat that many drivers aspire to secure."
"It's similar to the race from last week; the focus should be on the drama or the action that occurred, and that's how it will always be."
