George Russell Seizes Victory at Austrian GP After Verstappen-Norris Collision Drama
George Russell seizes unexpected victory at Austrian GP following crash involving Max Verstappen and Lando Norris
George Russell capitalizes on a late crash between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris to clinch the win in Austria.
A surprising turn of events at the F1 Austrian Grand Prix saw George Russell clinch an unexpected win, following a dramatic last-minute crash involving Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.
During Lap 63, Verstappen and Norris collided at Turn 3 while contending for the lead. This came after Verstappen experienced an unusually slow pit stop. The clash resulted in damage and punctures for both drivers.
Russell, who had not been involved in the fight for the lead and was in a remote third place when the crash occurred, took advantage of the late chaos to secure his second Formula 1 win.
Verstappen received a 10-second penalty for his role in the collision, yet he still managed to secure a fifth-place finish, thereby increasing his lead in the world championship standings.
Norris wasn't as lucky and suffered more from the collision, leading the McLaren driver to withdraw from the race.
"Amazing. At the start of the race, it was really challenging to maintain third position. I noticed Max and Lando were pushing hard, and I knew Lando was eager for the victory," Russell commented.
"The team has performed exceptionally well to get us into this competition. We were ready to seize the opportunity when it presented itself."
Verstappen and Norris were fiercely competing. I was astonished at how near we were to Lando and Max, just around 12 seconds behind them. I was aware that a collision was a possible outcome. You always have that hope.
"I'm extremely proud to be back in first place. We've made significant progress since the season began. The recent races have been amazing, and there's more to look forward to."
Oscar Piastri, his teammate, secured second position, followed by Ferrari's Carlos Sainz in third. The podium was completed just ahead of Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, who received a five-second penalty for a pit lane entry violation.
Nico Hulkenberg passed Sergio Perez's Red Bull in the final stages to claim sixth place, while Haas teammate Kevin Magnussen secured eighth, earning crucial points for the American team.
Daniel Ricciardo from RB and Pierre Gasly from Alpine secured the ninth and tenth spots, respectively, rounding out the positions that earn points. Charles Leclerc, however, had his race compromised by a collision on the first lap that damaged his Ferrari.
