George Russell Clarifies ‘Hot-Headed’ Radio Outburst During Qualifying as Mercedes Targets Spanish Grand Prix Victory
George Russell clarifies his "impulsive" radio outburst about Lewis Hamilton during qualifying.
George Russell elaborates on his radio complaint about Lewis Hamilton.
George Russell has explained his radio message about Lewis Hamilton during the F1 qualifying session for the Spanish Grand Prix.
In the third quarter, Russell appeared to be upset with Hamilton following the initial laps.
He exclaimed, "What on earth was Lewis doing getting ready for that lap?"
His race engineer, Marcus Dudley, responded, "It's okay. We’ll discuss it later. Stay focused."
Russell mentioned later that he felt irritated at first because Hamilton was attempting to gain an advantage by drafting behind Esteban Ocon's Alpine.
"Lewis was significantly ahead of me, but we were both targeting the same driver to catch the slipstream at the start of the lap," he mentioned to a group of journalists, including those from Crash.net.
"I was concentrating on my mirrors to make sure I didn't block Ocon. When I looked up, Lewis was right in front of me, attempting to draft behind Ocon. In the heat of the moment, as you're trying to optimize everything, you can get a bit flustered, but ultimately, there were no gains or losses."
Mercedes had an impressive showing in the qualifying session, with Hamilton taking third place and Russell securing the fourth spot on the starting grid.
Looking back on the qualifying session, Russell expected to be in contention for the pole position.
“Definitely. I believe we all had confidence in it,” Russell remarked. “The car has been performing excellently. Traditionally, we've always done quite well at this location. I think the difference in performance between us, Lando, and Max was somewhat larger than we anticipated.”
"Lewis and I didn’t quite nail the lap. Although the laps were good, on a track like this, finding the right tyre conditions can make a difference of a few tenths of a second, which is what Lando achieved today while we didn’t. Starting from third and fourth place is still a strong position for tomorrow’s race."
Mercedes holds a significant edge in the leading battle, as they have two cars competing.
Russell believes that Mercedes will be capable of competing for victory on Sunday.
"The speed of the car is the decisive factor on a track like this," he mentioned. He further explained that while you can employ various strategies due to the significant tyre wear, having even a slight edge in car performance, such as being a tenth of a second faster, will ultimately prevail over any strategic maneuvers.
“We’re going to give it a shot. I'm optimistic that we have the speed to compete with Max and Lando. I truly believe we have what it takes to challenge them for the win.”
