Lando Norris Stuns Verstappen with ‘Perfect Lap’ to Claim Spanish GP Pole
Lando Norris edges out Max Verstappen to secure pole position for the F1 Spanish Grand Prix with a flawless lap.
Lando Norris narrowly defeated Max Verstappen to secure the top spot in a gripping qualifying session at the F1 Spanish Grand Prix.
It looked like Verstappen was going to secure his eighth pole position in 10 races after blazing through the initial laps of Q3. However, Norris managed to edge him out at the last moment with an impressive lap, beating the current world champion by a mere 0.020 seconds.
The 24-year-old from Britain has secured his second pole position in Formula 1 and will be looking to turn it into his second win after his first victory in Miami.
"It was nearly an ideal lap," Norris commented in parc ferme. "You can tell when you're on a strong lap and it starts to get thrilling."
"Ultimately, everything turned out flawlessly. It was still a tight situation, but I am extremely pleased."
"I would describe it as my finest pole position. I haven't had many, but among those I've achieved, this one stands out as the best."
"The competition was tight throughout the weekend, but ultimately it came down to executing an impeccable lap, and that's exactly what I achieved today."
Lewis Hamilton achieved his highest qualifying position of the 2024 season by securing third place, trailing Norris by 0.320 seconds. This marks only the second occasion this year that he has outperformed his Mercedes teammate George Russell in qualifying.
Charles Leclerc narrowly edged out his Ferrari teammate and local favorite Carlos Sainz for the fifth position on the grid, with a slim margin of just 0.005 seconds. Meanwhile, Pierre Gasly delivered an impressive performance, securing seventh place on the grid for his Alpine.
Sergio Perez of Red Bull set a time that placed him eighth, but due to a three-place penalty, he will start the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday from the 11th position.
Esteban Ocon secured the ninth position driving the other Alpine car, while McLaren's Oscar Piastri ended up in 10th place after his final lap in Q3 was compromised by an off-track excursion into the gravel.
Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin failed to make it to Q3, finishing in 11th place, while Valtteri Bottas achieved an impressive 12th position for Sauber.
Nico Hulkenberg from Haas secured the 13th position, followed by Lance Stroll in his Aston Martin, while Zhou Guanyu of Sauber finished in 15th place.
Kevin Magnussen just missed advancing to Q2, finishing 16th in his Haas. He placed ahead of Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo, who qualified 17th and 18th respectively, even though Red Bull had upgraded their car for the weekend.
Williams drivers Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant posted the slowest times and will start from the last row, occupying the 19th and 20th positions on the grid.
