George Russell cautions against premature celebration despite Mercedes' strong showing in Spain
George Russell expresses enthusiasm for Mercedes' prospects at the Spanish Grand Prix.
George Russell harbors a guarded sense of optimism regarding Mercedes' prospects of leading the pack in the upcoming F1 Spanish Grand Prix this weekend.
Mercedes had yet another successful Friday at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with Lewis Hamilton leading the pack in the second practice session.
This follows Mercedes' most successful weekend of the season, which occurred during the previous event in Canada.
Russell captured the top qualifying spot and achieved Mercedes' initial podium finish of the season, proving that the W15 was superior in dry conditions.
Mercedes appears to be back in contention in Barcelona, a track that has historically favored the team.
Looking back on Friday's events in Spain, Russell commented, "I'm feeling optimistic. The car is really excelling on this track."
"I need to examine it more closely, but evidently, Lewis led the leaderboard, which was wonderful to observe.
"I felt incredibly powerful on the medium tyre. Regarding our long run speed in FP1? We were among the fastest."
"Although it's just Friday, it feels like a long time since we've regularly hit the high marks."
Russell anticipates Mercedes' competitors will make gains overnight, leading to a competitive battle at the forefront.
"Today, over the distance, we emerged as the fastest. However, our speed may not have been as high when it came to the low-fuel qualifying rounds," he continued. "Yet, this afternoon, our pace in qualifying definitely appeared to be very solid.
"I'm in high spirits, really thrilled. This is the moment we've long been pursuing."
"We need to remain grounded. Lewis delivered an outstanding performance, especially with his lap in FP2. However, we're aware that when it comes to qualifying, the Red Bulls tend to step up their game. We're anticipating Max to really push the limits. The McLarens showed impressive speed, and so did Carlos. Therefore, we're bracing for a competitive battle."
