Funding Shortfall Threatens Labour’s Pledge to End the 8AM GP Appointment Scramble, Doctors Warn
Physicians caution that the rush for early morning GP slots will persist without increased financial support. The Labour Party has vowed to eliminate this chaotic rush by enabling patients to "conveniently schedule visits with their preferred doctor in their desired way." However, the Doctors' Association UK contends that this commitment is unfeasible with the existing budget levels.

Doctors have cautioned that without substantial additional funding, the government will be unable to eliminate the rush for GP appointments at 8am.
Throughout their campaign, the Labour Party committed to eliminating the early morning rush for medical appointments by facilitating a more flexible booking system where patients can schedule visits with their preferred doctors in a way that suits them best.
However, the Doctors' Association UK has stated that the manifesto promise is unachievable with the existing budget.
Dr. Lizzie Toberty, the GP lead for the organization, stated that an additional minimum of £35 per patient annually is necessary to reach the funding levels that were available ten years ago.
"She explained to the i newspaper that they are paid a fixed annual fee for each patient regardless of the complexity of their cases, the procedures they require, or the number of visits they make."
"The compensation has not kept pace with inflation or the requirements of patients, resulting in primary care having to increasingly do more with fewer resources. This is evident in the challenges individuals face when trying to schedule appointments with their general practitioner."
Latest data from the NHS indicates that the average expenditure per patient for the fiscal year 2022-23 was £164.64.

The alert regarding financial support arises following a decisive vote by general practitioners in England to strike for the first time since 1964. An overwhelming 98% of the 8,500 doctors participating in the vote supported the move towards industrial action.
After the Labour government took office last month, they have proposed a 22.3% salary increase for junior doctors, to be implemented over a two-year period.
Healthcare professionals had been advocating for a 35% raise, citing several years of effective salary reductions.
