Franco Colapinto to Make Formula 1 Debut with Williams, Replacing Logan Sargeant for 2024 Season
Williams has selected Franco Colapinto to take over from Logan Sargeant for the remainder of the 2024 season.
Williams announced on Tuesday that Franco Colapinto is set to take over Logan Sargeant's spot for the rest of the 2024 Formula 1 campaign.
Following a challenging year and a half in Formula 1, Sargeant is set to depart from Williams, clearing the path for Colapinto to embark on his F1 journey starting at the Italian Grand Prix.
Rumors regarding Sargeant's career prospects intensified after his significant accident during the last practice session at the Dutch Grand Prix.
Williams considered various alternatives, such as Red Bull's Liam Lawson, prior to opting for Colapinto from their own driver academy for the promotion.
The Argentine racer, aged 21, has been participating in the FIA Formula 2 championship this year, currently holding the sixth position in the overall standings, just one spot in front of Mercedes' rising star Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Regarding the announcement, Colapinto expressed, "It's a privilege to commence my Formula 1 journey with Williams – this is the fulfillment of a dream. The team boasts an incredible legacy and a commitment to return to leading positions, something I'm eager to contribute to. Joining F1 mid-season presents a steep learning curve, but I'm ready to tackle it head-on. I'm dedicated to putting in all the effort necessary alongside Alex and the entire team to ensure our success."
Team leader James Vowles acknowledged that the choice to substitute Sargeant was exceptionally difficult for the American.
Nonetheless, the ex-Mercedes strategist believes it offers Williams the optimal opportunity to earn points.
Vowles emphasized, “The choice to switch drivers mid-campaign wasn't made easily, yet we're convinced that this move offers Williams the optimal opportunity to vie for points as the season progresses.
