Francesco Bagnaia Bravely Returns to Barcelona, Scene of Last Year’s Frightening Crash, with Eyes on Victory
Pecco Bagnaia's opinion on revisiting the site of a terrifying accident
"Undoubtedly, it ranks among the less secure locations in the world championship because of the pavement."
This weekend marks Francesco Bagnaia's comeback to Barcelona, the location of his frightening experience from the previous year.
In September, during the initial lap of the Catalunya MotoGP, Bagnaia experienced a highside crash. Upon landing, he alarmingly received a blow to his legs from Brad Binder's KTM.
He was fortunate to escape serious harm.
The current MotoGP champion boldly addressed his comeback to racing in Barcelona for the first time since his hospitalization following that incident.
Bagnaia described his return as "quite ordinary" when speaking to Motosprint.
"Comparable to competing on any other track. It's all in the past now."
Bagnaia mentioned regarding Montmelo: “It's a circuit I've always had a great fondness for.
"The world championship's safety is compromised by the condition of the asphalt."
"That's the reason why jogging through it can be risky, yet it remains among the most picturesque and distinctive areas."
Heading into the Catalunya MotoGP, Bagnaia trails the championship frontrunner Jorge Martin by 38 points.
"Bagnaia expressed that the competition is challenging, noting that numerous competitors are performing well."
"Numerous bicycles are in close contention for victory, similarly to what has been observed in the past few years."
"The situation is set to become increasingly complex. At present, Martin stands out as the primary adversary."
Martin emerged victorious in both the sprint race and the grand prix during the previous event held at Le Mans.
Bagnaia shared his goals for the upcoming Barcelona event, stating, "My primary aim is to complete the race. Just like in France, it's been two years since I've managed to reach the finish line here."
"In 2022, I was taken out of the competition at the very first turn, but last year, I made a significant move at the second."
"I aspire to manage at least four rotations!"
"Once again, it was a circuit where we excelled last year, reaching high speeds."
"Running on the medium tire in Sunday’s race could have likely secured us another win, but things unfolded as they did…"
