Flavio Briatore Shakes Up Alpine’s Formula: Team Over Talent in 2025 Driver Strategy
Flavio Briatore shares news about the highly sought-after open spot for the 2025 Formula 1 racing team
“At this point, the driver's identity is irrelevant"
Flavio Briatore states that Alpine is concentrating on reorganizing their team instead of deciding on their driver lineup for the upcoming season.
The experienced Formula 1 professional has made a comeback to the sport, taking up a position as an executive advisor at Alpine.
Esteban Ocon's tenure with his current team is concluding this year, with plans to move to Haas in 2025, necessitating Pierre Gasly to search for a new teammate.
Alpine is rumored to be on the verge of elevating reserve driver Jack Doohan to a regular racing position, filling the spot left by Ocon.
However, Briatore shared on the Formula For Success podcast regarding their team composition, "At this point, I'm uncertain. Currently, we haven't decided on the driver…
"At this juncture, it's crucial to assemble the team, incorporating elements from the business aspect, the technological aspect, and the administrative aspect."
"At this stage, the driver's role is no longer significant."
"The pivotal years were 2006, 2007, 2008. At that time, I think Carlos Sainz was the only driver on hand."
Departing Ferrari racer Sainz has chosen to join Williams in 2025, sidelining offers from both Alpine and Sauber.
Alpine's open position is among the last four spots left to be filled in the 2025 Formula 1 driver roster.
Briatore went on to say, “In my view, it all comes down to how the car performs. It’s about entirely overhauling the team structure.
"A quality vehicle requires a skilled driver. Should the vehicle underperform…
"We're channeling all our efforts into the technological aspects to ensure the Alpine car's appearance continuously improves."
"In 2026, I anticipate the unveiling of the latest Alpine model."
Now aged 74, Briatore was formerly in charge of the Benetton team when Michael Schumacher secured his championships.
He subsequently managed the period during which Fernando Alonso secured his championships with Renault.
His newest task involves revitalizing the Alpine F1 team, which has faced a difficult 2024 season.
One of their problems involved Ocon, who collided with his teammate Gasly in Monaco, sparking frustration among his team leaders.
Alpine subsequently announced that Ocon would depart from the team at the conclusion of the current year, and he has now joined Haas.
