Fernando Alonso states his dislike for excuses as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that it will take more than a single individual to resolve Aston Martin's issues, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Speculation circulating within the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal the acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Newey, the current Chief Technology Officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will then be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his future team has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
"At Monza, Alonso commented that the situation is still based on rumors and it's not solely one person's responsibility to resolve it."
"It's about focusing on our current resources and outputs. We need to identify what is progressing positively and what isn't, and use that insight to better prepare for 2025."
Adrian Newey being available next year means he could manage the development of a 2026 car for a different team, potentially offering them a significant benefit when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso through to the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the forthcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. Fernando Alonso secured 11th place at the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin before they fully launch their efforts in 202
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso commented. “We’re relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"A weekend filled with inspiration, such as this one for me, will remain entirely anonymous."
"Throughout this year, Lance and I have consistently finished races within two or three seconds of each other, whether he was ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform a bit better, feeling really comfortable with the car and pushing it to its limits, perhaps even beyond what I thought was possible. As a result, I secured 11th place."
"Feeling let down, indeed. We have to remain patient and remember that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outpaced by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we need to elevate our performance. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
“Within four months, McLaren advanced from being in last place to securing a spot on the podium. This provides us with clear instances of improvement.
"Furthermore, Mercedes began the season just like we did. We were on par with Mercedes for the initial four races, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I'm not one to make excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show any progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current car's performance is insufficient and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance was lacking in Monza, Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that significant changes won't occur in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"The strategy is set. Everyone on the team understands what’s going on. We're all putting in maximum effort. So, we remain together and continue to push forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we almost got two points, and that’s the fight we’re in."
