Fernando Alonso Dismisses ‘One-Man Fix’ Amid Adrian Newey Rumors as Aston Martin Struggles Persist
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an announcement involving Adrian Newey this week
As Aston Martin faces challenges, Fernando Alonso states, "I don't believe in making excuses."
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, even as Adrian Newey remains rumored to be connected with the team.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicated that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the current Chief Technology Officer of Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. Following his departure, he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that Aston Martin could be his next team has intensified recently, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
Speaking at Monza, Alonso remarked, "At this point, it's just speculation, and I believe resolving the situation isn't the responsibility of just one person."
"It's really about what we currently possess and what we're creating. It's important to grasp what is progressing positively, what is not, and aim to better prepare for the year 2025."
Next year, Newey could be free to join a new team and supervise the development of their 2026 car, possibly providing them with a significant edge as the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured substantial funds into a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through the end of 2026. They are also collaborating with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather discouraging.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth before Aston Martin makes a significant push in 2026.
"There’s nothing we can do about it," Alonso responded. "We’re reliant on our team, and both Lance and I are doing our utmost every weekend."
"This weekend, feeling inspired as I am, I’m certain will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have consistently finished races very close to each other, often just two or three seconds apart, either ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform a bit better, feeling satisfied with the car and pushing it possibly beyond its limits. As a result, I secured 11th place."
"Yes, it’s disappointing. We must remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
“We're currently trailing behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull. I believe it's essential for us to elevate our performance. We must improve.”
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have the opportunity to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from finishing last to securing a podium spot within four months, providing us with clear evidence."
"Additionally, our start was just like Mercedes'. We matched their performance in the first four races, and they've already secured three wins this year. Therefore, I don't support making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current state of the car is inadequate and will remain so until improvements are made.
"Performance in Monza was lacking. It was also subpar in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I don't anticipate significant differences in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's the strategy. The team understands what's going on. Everyone is giving it their all. So yes, we stay together and continue to strive forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly got two points, and that's the fight we're in."
