Fernando Alonso Dismisses Newey Rumors, Calls for Team Effort Amid Aston Martin Struggles
Fernando Alonso responds to the "speculation" about Adrian Newey's announcement happening this week
"As someone who doesn’t like to make excuses," Fernando Alonso expresses while addressing Aston Martin's challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, as rumors keep connecting Adrian Newey to the team.
Insider tips from the Monza circuit during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal Newey's recruitment in the coming days.
Newey, who currently holds the position of chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his role at the start of next year, at which point he'll be eligible to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his future team has intensified lately, while the possibility of him moving to Ferrari has diminished.
"Actually, it's all still speculation, and in my view, it's not the responsibility of just a single person to make corrections," Alonso remarked at Monza.
"It focuses on what we currently possess and what we're creating. It's about recognizing the positive and negative trends and striving to improve our approach for 2025."
Next year, Newey could supervise the development of the 2026 car for a different company, potentially providing them with a significant edge as the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has made significant investments in a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract extension for Alonso through 2026. They are collaborating with Honda to develop an engine in line with upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, outcomes have been quite disappointing.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the team standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso crossed the finish line in 11th place, while his team member Lance Stroll came in 19th.
2025 could serve as a preparatory year for significant advancements from Aston Martin, with a more aggressive strategy planned for
"We're essentially powerless," Alonso stated. "Basically, we're at the mercy of our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our utmost effort each weekend.
"During an inspiring weekend, much like the one I'm experiencing, I'm certain it will remain entirely unknown."
Throughout this year, Lance and I have consistently been neck and neck, finishing races with just a two or three-second gap, either leading or trailing. This weekend happened to be one where I had a slight edge, feeling quite satisfied with the car's performance and pushing myself possibly beyond what's considered 100%, which resulted in an 11th place finish.
"Admittedly, feeling let down. It's crucial we remain patient and recognize that our primary goal is set for 2026."
“However, I believe that collectively as a group, we might come to terms with not competing for a spot among the top four. These teams are elite and significantly ahead of us.
"However, currently trailing behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull, it's clear we must elevate our standards. We have to improve."
Alonso mentioned regarding the car for the upcoming year: "I believe there's still an opportunity for us to respond."
"Within a span of four months, McLaren progressed from being at the bottom to securing a podium finish, providing us with definitive examples."
"Additionally, Mercedes began on equal footing with us. For the initial four races, we were on par with Mercedes, and they've clinched victory in three races this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it appears improbable that Aston Martin will see any enhancements in the upcoming races.
"Alonso expressed his frustration, stating, 'I believe this is the situation until we get a car upgrade, and frankly, it's not sufficient.'"
"Performance fell short in Monza. It was also lacking in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"Therefore, I don't anticipate significant alterations in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce fresh components."
"The strategy is set. Everyone on the team is informed about what's happening. They're all giving it their all. So, indeed, we remain cohesive. We continue to strive. The previous weekend we managed to secure a single point. Today, we nearly reached two points, and this is the challenge we're facing."
